The making of a EJ22 n/a & EJ25 n/a Turbo
He all , I have had a few calls for those who are thinking they would like to turbo there EJ22 n/a motor or have a 2.5 & want to turbo that .So I
thought I would give some insight on how this is done by doing a thread on this subject .
1st we all need to send some Pm,s to my bald headed mate Simon ( Humpty ) to get his 2.5 n/a motor out of the shed & on a motor stand so he can
follow this build as we go .Are you there Simon ? hello ( ? )
Ok to get going on the build you need the following for your EJ22 build
1 x wrx inlet manifold c/w injectors & a full harness & ecu
1 x left & right wrx heads ( keep away from early rs liberty )
1 x WRX / RS turbo .I am using a RS VF12 turbo
1 x WRX turbo headers
..................................................................
The EJ25 build we are going to use the stock EJ25 heads & drill & tap the oil feed & drain to the stock block , shit we are even going to
use the Stock cams in this build as Simon is poor
photos soon

yes mate you can do this with the ej22 heads ,BUT !
No oil feed for the turbo
No water feed for the turbo
Quad cam heads are better ( better cams )

im just an outsider reading this and will admit now i know pretty much FA bout subis but couldnt u turbo an EJ22 same style as u would an air cooled
motor
ie. turbo oil feed Tee off the oil pressure switch,
drain to sump or wherever else possible and use a non water cooled turbo
the appeal to me is keeping single cam heads and mounting the turbo above the engine would mean no major cutting of the firewall and inner gaurds

yep you can do that , many have in the usa > this is about just doing a n/a to turbo with stock subaru bits not making cistom headers , custom oil
lines ect .Many people do not have the skill or time to make these items .

Hey fellas.... I'm here.... Don't get out much cause the old school turbo POS60 project is taking my time at the mo.... But I know Neil is on my
back about doing this.... As soon as the 1776 gets a little top end love (don't we all need that!? ) and gets stuffed into the POS60, we can start on the EJ25T.... I promise.... But in the meantime, Neil can go
and play with that EJ22 he has dropping oil in his shed!

ej22 block may be stronger and slightly more displacement, but why not just save the time and spend the money upgrading the turbo on your ej20t??
maybe add an aftermarket ecu or a piggyback setup and then youll run around 260 hp easy. the bigger turbo would provide quick spooling too.
also ive seen some turbo kits popping up for the n/a 2.5's. the engines usually are not strong enough to run boost over 10psi if left stock but can
put out a good 5-7psi reliably. however these bolt on kits run well over 1.5k. i guess thats because they include everything. i would imagine you
wouldnt need alot of this stuff on a custom car. if you could some how attain some STI heads or maybe even just get a long block from a performance
shop, then youd be in business, but i imagine they wouldnt let those go for cheap. ive seen full sti engines and trannies on ebay selling for
ridiculously high prices some around 6-8k just for the engine!!!! thats just stupid to me, but i digress. my advise would be that if you couldnt some
how change the open deck design of the heads, then your better off running a built wrx motor for budget purposes. those go for 500- 850 bucks with low
miles from an importer and sometimes can be had for damn near free!! with the performance mods you can have a beast for under 2k. and in a light car
it would eat sti's for lunch!!
just looking around and here at vishnu performance they claim this reflash of the ecu can put down 30-40 more hp at the flywheel. im thinking its for
the later sohc 2.5's, but i assume its the same for dohc's as well. for 750 bucks thats a good gain for not going aftermarket....... http://www.vishnutuning.com/forrester_v280.htm
Outfrontmotorsports.com also sells custom turbo headers for the 2.5 motors. they also got turbos and IC's. everything you need to put together a
"kit" for a 2.5. pretty decent prices too. i did everything on my conversion through them so maybe im biased but they have great customer service
and have gotten me out of many problems. they do turbo sand cars as well as conversions so they have years of experience. i would maybe call them
about the limits of turboing a 2.5 or doing a 2.2 turbo.
my 2cents.

WOW! nice 12 second run!! kudos.
Must be a great car to drive. I would love to see the setup in a bug. thats kinda what i was referring to. i have a 2.5 running an aftermarket ecu in
my 71 super and im supposed to be making near 200hp. thats with an extremely short exhaust and only an alternator on the belt. im thinking i should be
able to break into the low 12's with good tires. i guess a turbo would throw a good 60-80 hp on the motor. but after hearing many things on 2.5rs
forums and others as to how the 2.5's are high compression and become increasingly less reliable after the turbo, i figured for a daily driver it may
not be worth it to have to break down the motor every so often. thats why i ditched the old aircooled motor to begin with!!
i guess what it boils down to is how good your setup is and how well it is tuned and put together. there is no replacement for a skilled mechanic. but
theres also no replacement for the smiles on your face after hitting 12's in the quarter!!!! a balance is necessary between how fast you want to go
and how much maintenance your willing to do, and the money factor of course. reality sucks sometimes, unless your rich!! where has my great economy
gone???

Well... Here's one for the nah sayers....
13 years ago my brother put an EJ20T out of an RS into his Notchback... he drives it at least 4 times a week, it has done many long distance trips,
gets 45mpg no matter how hard you drive it and it pulls high 12 on the quarter all day long...
Now this is a stock EJ20T that is nearly twenty years old of unknown mileage.... It had never broken anything save for one transaxle in that time....
He does almost no maintenance on it and has only had to change the oil and filter once a year....
I'm pretty sure the old EJ20T's out of the early RS' only made around 165hp mark (correct me Neil if I wrong), but this thing pulls like a 13 year
old and has never let him down....
As for my EJ25T conversion?.... It is next off the rank Neil (and no you can't have the Notch!)... Right after the stroker for the Ragtop is built
this winter.... Promise!

sounds like a pretty amazing build humpty. i can see how that would be a far-fetched situation. seems pretty miraculous to be able to pull off numbers
like that without a perfectly new engine or at least a rebuild of some sorts on a built motor. high 12's in a full bodied notch with only 165 hp
doesnt even seem possible?! but then again what do i know? i never raced a legal race a day in my life. let me know the secrets!! haha. more power to
ya! hope the new build is just as physics defying!

Most of this is actually quite true.
I know this Notch quite well, however its now been about 18 months since the engine oil was changed.
