whats the whine
Hi all, my gearbox is whining under load, in all gears.
I was told (elsewhere) that this whine is probably from the main shaft bearing.
i've recorded the sound here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVb4F75xA10
It started making the noise after reversing off a kerb.
Any ideas?

Definitely sounds related to the input or mainshaft.
It is tuff to work out what happened to cause it so suddenly.
If the engine hit the ground real hard, the input shaft may be running off centre causing your problem.
If the noise is coincidental it will most likely require a complete disassembly to find and replace the damaged bearing.

clever use of u tube...........what vw is it in?
have u thought of adding 2 doses of molybond? ..wortha try, saves alot of work
my ole vw nechanic used a far thinner grade of oil with Molybond to up hp in the ole 36hp beetles.
want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!

hehe the old crash box whine
once upon a time all car gearboxes made that noise from new just cos of the way the trannys were built
i agree with Dave, definatley sounds like input shaft the way it happens in every gear with engine revs

Yes, try Molybond
or I had great success with PRO-MAR additive in a noisy gearbox...
the noise eventually just about disappeared
and I couldn't hear the radio at first...

thanks for all the info. Its a 67 beetle. Oil levels are fine, I replaced the gear oil about 2 years ago and checked it since the noise started and i
had to add 300-400 mL to bring it up to full, which didn't change the noise.
It doesn't look like it hit the ground. Unfortunately I wasn't there when it happened.
regarding molybond and promar, I just googled them and found they each make many products. Is there a particular one thats recommended? and are we
talking just squirting it into the gearbox?
If it is the input shaft uncentered, can I do anything?
and is there a bearing behind the input shaft oil seal? In the books it looks like there isnt a bearing except on the mainshaft

PRO-MAR additive Excellent...
Hi,
Promar - I have used it successfully the past few years in My gearbox
which as i said was VERY noisy...
but over two years and probably 5,000kms it slowly got better...
the Pro Mar is supposed to fill any imperfections in the gearbox...
I used about 1/2 a bottle of it...
and yes, Just squirt it into the gearbox...
it won't hurt anything....
I have used Molybond in all My vehicles over the years and never had a gearbox problem ever...
but if it will stop any wear that has aready started...??
I don't know..
PRO-Mar is used by Many truck drivers in their gearboxes and diffs...
Pro mar isn't sold in shops either...
I couldn't find anyone to buy any more of it..
but I bumped into a fellow in Maccas a few nights ago..
and asked if he sold it as he had a Pro mar jacket on..

Those additives will not replace lost hardening on bearing surfaces.

drain the oil and check the magnetic plugs for steel particles if there excessive then its time
as per above the additives will not fix the bearing or gear surfaces only put off an overhaul for a little while

I checked the oil (when noise started) from the side filler plug and topped up a bit, there were no particles there. I didn't remove or look at the
bottom plug. I might do that too.
I will try the molybond.
but is there anything i can do with an uncentred input shaft, if that turns out to be the case?

Just check that the engine is located in the gearbox spigot like it should be.
It is unlikely to be the prob, it was just a (wishful thinking) stab in the dark.
It would have to have had a pretty solid hit for it to be misaligned....or the engine bolts loose.
