To the Brothers Alder…the Eels can hold their heads up after coming from 8th in the finals to only lose the GF by one try and a field goal that came about through a dodgy decision by the ref. Thanks westi…value your comment as always and you could be right, however there's a reason to try a SC to see if I can get it to work. I have a theory that a SC on my small displacement motor can work better than the turbo. If I’m wrong I’ll take it on the chin and put the turbo back on and you can say ‘I told you so”...:yes: Plus I’m not 100% happy with the installation of mine. And yes I love the sound. Still have a boner over the CBB beetle.

Colonel Mustard…1 ¾ SU carb, T02 turbo from Nissan exa and home made manifold.

Mick…No worries any time. Next time your at Karana Downs let me know and we’ll catch up. I wish I could have followed you so I could have looked at your car longer.

Can't believe it's been since October last year since i've added anything.

Anyway, i'm in the process of fitting a blower but got side tracked after playing around with a 3D modelling program and finding a mob who can laser cut from my drawings.

So I decided to do a narrowed front beam from scratch. So between DB and myself we came up with this and made 2.

My beam has been narrowed 65mm and fitted with avis adjusters. 65mm means I don't have to mess with the inner guard. Trial fit up prior to powder coating was good. weighs 2.4kg's lighter to boot.

Not using bearings but some DB machined Delrin bushes. I'll post some more pics when I get all the fruit fittrd

Nice beam..... Been thinking about building my from scratch instead of modding stockers.... Might still go down that road...
By the way.... My 90mm narrowed beams fit without any modes to the body!!!!

cool....I just wanted to narrow enough to get rid of the baja look. I will need to modify (read remove) the headlight buckets....damn dragstars

SC is on the backburner for a while or I won't make it to Warwick. So in the interim I'm going to stick with the turbo but do some minor upgrades.

After some guidance by DB I’m going different heads with bigger valves, bigger cam and flicking the SU and fitting a Holley. The Holley will also double as a SC carb when the time comes.

I also want to do away with the fan and genny and fit an alternator. To cool I will look at either kombi electric fan or CB drag fans but I don't believe they will fit as they will foul a standard manifold. Losing the fan is not set in stone yet for obvious reasons. If anybody has any thoughts on this feel free to chime in.

Stanley is away at the moment.

He found a nice virgin set of 040 heads,
and had the spark plug hole welded up.
I am fitting larger valve seats for him,
and will rough out one cylinder's chamber and ports for him to duplicate.
Probably go for a 40mm inlet and 35.5 exhaust.

Never had a seat move yet.
They are thicker than they appear, especially exhaust.

These are actually thicker than the stock seat,
but have used very narrow seats before.

Secret to seating stability is correct interference,
realistic head temps and good valve control.

Aluminium bronze seat material helps to maintain the interference at any head temp,
and also transfers heat into the head casting better than the iron/steel based factory seat.

My own engines use 260lbs of seat tension and a narrow seat, with excellent consistency.

Yes mate, agree 100%, most of my builds I'm working with a seat that's already there, it's nice to see such a nice, narrow seat.
Thicker than stock.. only just, I might even guess the same, taking into account /mm of diameter. :)

With Warwick only weeks away I thought it was time to get some work done on the car and go with a few minor changes.

Most notable is the SU has gone and has been replaced by a 600 holley with vac secondaries. This also meant a new manifold made by Westi who also made me a catch tank aswell. Both items look great and fit perfectly.

Other addition is some new heads (view previous posts) that have had the plug ports welded up then sent to DB for new holes to be drilled and bigger valves to be fitted. Some porting was also done. Also fitted a narrowed beam and lowered it more now the tyres don't scrub.

Displacement has gone back to 1641 and hopefully I can last Warwick without cracking the pistons again. Hopefully the carb and some timing changes will help.

Actually i'm just hoping the carb works as hoped. Might take the SU just in case

Thanks guys

Warwick for me this year will be a test and tune. Focus is on getting it down the 1/4 without breaking pistons.
It's only managed one pass down the 1/4 and was on it's way to posting a respectable time (13.50 - 88mph) before breaking some pistons before the line and slowing. Best 1/8 is 8.39 - 78mph

yep all running after a minor problem. Couldn't get it to idle with the holley originally but have since found and and fixed problem.
Holley seems to have made a difference. Revs much crisper now and has no flat spots or hesitation. Hope this is the same on the track.
Still does my head in seeing a 600 holley working on a 1600 volksy. Sounds different too with Daves heads.
Just need to hook up a throttle cable.

and no...not forgrtting the ausssies. It's just that a holley on a volksy in the US is like having owned a HQ.

Funny thing is I was all set to modify the holley to be boost sensitive as per what i've read but then when I asked some questions was told not to worry and just run bigger jets and a smaller power valve. So that's what i've done. Time will tell.

Maybe I should order some new pistons.....:crazy:

Well after a top weekend at Warwick in spite of the rain I managed 3 runs into the 7’s with a best of 7.77 @ 87mph.

This was with the new front end, a new (old) set of heads with bigger valves and some porting work. The biggest unknown was the addition of the 600 Holley.
There were different schools of thought on boost referencing but I settled on no referencing with a 3.5 power valve and started with 60 jets.

I noticed it would only idle for about 15-20secs before the AF showed it getting lean and would eventually stop unless you revved it. I assumed it was draining the fuel bowls increased the fuel pressure which fixed the problem. I did have a blocked jet at one stage to which required a clean.

After the first clean run (which saw the wheels spin on a damp track and the back step out) I decided to fit a 2.5PV and go up to 65 main jets. AF meter showed it was not lean under boost.
However on the last run, after I increased the boost and at the end of the run I could smell oil in the car and noticed vapour out of the breather so decided that was it.

Yesterday pulled the engine out and pulled the barrels and pistons to find a small portion of land between the oil ring and bottom comp ring had broken away on No 3 only. Everything else looked ok. Plugs and pistons showed no signs of being lean but maybe rich if possible. Don’t know if the damage started on the 1st run or the last. Timing was limited to 22deg by the way.

Not sure where to go from here as far as pistons. Is it just that 87mm pistons are the problem? Maybe if I go slightly bigger jets I’ll be right. Thinking about Nissan SR20 pistons as they come in 87mm and have the same gudgeon diameter as a volksy. Not sure on how the deck would end up though. These pistons are around $750 for a set so thinking long and hard about this.

I’m keen to get back on fitting the blower but am also keen to see what it would do on the 1/4. Anyhow if anyone’s got any ideas before I deplete the world market on 87mm pistons I’m all ears.

what about doing a quick run on the dyno to see whats really happening, could be something easy to fix before spending heaps on new pistons..just a thought anyway, would be interesting to see the results..Troy
