it can be done
my red 75 had a 61 1200 in it
but its really not a smart move at all
ok 1 the car is gonna be dangerously slow u wont be able to get out of the way of things
and 2 its really gonna strugle and not last long at all cos the gearing is for a larger engine
1600 twin port motors are a dime a dozen and easy to pick up sell the 1200 and get the right motor
its not worth rooting around with
so the real question is why??

WOW
thats one nice and clean 1200 engine....

You need to remember that the VW gearbox is really a transaxle as the DIFF is inside it...

and the 1600 diff has a very high diff ratio...
i think 3.88 to 1
where the 1200 had 4.375 to 1..

so it would be pushing the 1200 engine....
just not enough horsepower..

You could fit 13 inch rear wheels... lol...

it was in a bug that just about to be put in the car crusher
it had been sitting around unused for many years

to further make that 1200 strugle pushing a late bug around is the fact it has a 36hp carb and distributor which would be to small for it even in a standard 1200 let alone a high geared late bug

this should do the trick:

but on a serious note theres not alot of performance mods u can do with 40 horsers
if its only short term live with
just wait for very large gaps when entering traffic

The 1600 FW will need a small bit of machining to fit onto a 40hp crank.
Just the first piece near the O ring is 54mm and needs to be 55.

If your 1200 clutch is the early type, you can remove the 'throw out ring' from the 40hp clutch and use it against the 1600 throwout bearing.

But you would have to use a 6V starter on 12 Volts and get a special bush for the tranny to match the end of the 6V starter.

I dissassemble the starter and turn the end down to match the 12V bush.
