why on earth do you want a tandem to move a VW ?
Haveing both a Tandem and a single axle I would never take the tandem over the single unless I was moving something real heavy. A single is easier to
tow and move around not to mkention usually lighter.
Just my $0.02 worth but have a look around at what all the VW boys have that tow lots and we all have single axle trailers.

Hi Brad
I agree single axles are much better to tow.
Are you allowed to tow trailer with that much load on it in Qld? I imagine the 2 Bajas would weigh a similar amount?

Yeah - I looked for a single axle to hire when I went up to Lismore to pick up the Beetle from Dub74L a couple of weeks back, but couldn't find one.
I almost fitted a couple of planks to my old boat trailer for the job. I'll be rebuilding the boat trailer soon, so will make it dual purpose when I
do - single axle, VW and boat (which is a 3.8m Markham Whaler power catamaran).

cheers for ya tips yeah..
however a few points come to mind..
i will be doing long hauls with it so if a flat happens 3 wheels are better than one
resale is always a factor for me
2t rating means just about anything can be lugged on it so not just exclusively for the vw breed..

h.
Get a tandem car trailer fullstop.
Better resale value ,larger carrying capacity, safer, especially if you get a blow out at 100klicks.
How much do you value your car? .

Depends on your needs. I bought a tandem axle trailer with sides, so I can carry dirt and rubble as well. Approx 7m x 2.5m weights 800kg, carry mass
of 2.5 tonne. Easy to resell as they will even carry 4wds.
What my garage isn't messy........Well chaos is a form of order isn't it?

your call but just a few more points..
My single axle car trailer carries 2 Tonne .. don;t forget 2 Tonne is the max you can have with a normal hitch setup and single axle brakes, so if
yourtrailer weighs 600 kg then you can only carry 1400 kg anyway. My trailer weighs 425 kg and has a 2 Tonne rated axle on it.
I have had a flat when towing a kombi at 110 kmph .. it pulled like a flat I pulled over and changed it.. didn't feel dangerous etc. There is a LOT
less wear on a single axle trailer tyre than there is on a tandem, not to mention bearings.
Resale ?? WTF ??? I bet I can sell my single axle car trailer for more than it owes me and I bet I could sell my tandem for less than it owes me.
Size is what will stop you carrying a lot of things and most things you cant legally Tow, what is your tow vehicle and its capacity ?
Adsman - a 7m trailer with a 2.5 tonne carry capacity weighing 800 kg mmmm so it has axles that can hold 3.3 Tonne, electric brakes on all wheels and
is towed with something bigger than my 80 series landcruiser.. do tell ? Seems like a lot for a tandem for normal use. I am guessing you tow it with a
truck ??
As I said it is your call but I just thought i would offer some input as if you wanna tow VW's cheaply then a single will be much better for you.

Hi
Towing a VW on trailer needs some thought as well, it depends on the trailer construction as to where the axle is. On my friends single axle trailer
that I borrow, a Beetle or any rear engined vehicle tows better with the car on backwards.
I've done some high speeds with a car on this trailer it has light truck tyres on it which are just about bullet proof, even when towing with my
Prado, a 4 wheel trailer I've used pushes it around.

As I said Brad it depends on your use. Personally it suited me. I do some weekend work with it as well as jobs for my own property.
As for the tow vehicle, Nissan patrol with electric brakes (Well it was until recently, now in need on a new one) and two heavy duty axles ( approx 4
tonne carrying according to supplier). As for the hitch setup I know nothing about, its setup is like caravan. What sort of setup should it have for
over 2 tonne rating? Mine is currently as built in NSW for QLD.
Fully agree on the point about tyre wear and certainly ease of maneuvering around the back of a house. Dual wheels take patience to reverse. Large
trailers up here are hard to get and sell very quickly, must be different in Brisvegas.
As Brad said definately check the LEGAL TOWING CAPACITY of your vehicle I cannot stress this enough. Also something to think about is most vehicle
manufacturers state the max towing capacity with electric brakes not hydraulic overriders. Also depending on the vehicle they can be moded and blue
plated to a higher capacity. (Often brakes and suspension mods.) If only towing VW's then go for the single axle, as Brad stated they are cheaper to
run.
hope this clears thing up a bit...

cheers for your input guys n gals..
i am looking at both at the mo
my T4 diesel will be pulling the trailer then soon a T5 will do the work
for me the beetle and bays will be trucked around, but for me resale in a hurry is an issue (if ever needed) and i feel a tandem will sell without a
prob if i need cash fast yeah..
cheers for you thoughts and input again
i value the argument and debate heaps
btw i have a set up 8x5 box trailer that can carry my motorbikes also, so a straight car carrier will do sweetly yeah

I think enough has been said but I will offer one last point.
If you buy a Tandem Axle for say $2000 - $2500 which is about he going price for one which needs a little love but is solid and you needed to sell it
in a hurry you would get $1200 - $1500.
If you buy a single axle for say $1000 - $1500 which is about what they go for and need to sell it in a hurry you would get $1000 plus just as if not
quicker.
And if you are selling it in a hurry then the less money you have to loose the better as that is why most people sell.
So in short I think buying a tandem because you want to be able selll it in a hurry is a very .. small we say weird arguemnet and I don;t think it
should rate as a reason to buy or not buy a trailer of one style or another.
Anyway good luck, finding a good trailer of any sort is often a lot harder than you think.
