Just spent six months in a leaky boat

Well it felt that way. Got my bug home last night. No probs. Today i decided to check her out in detail.Checked the condition of the RS2000 seats under the seat covers. After a good vacuum inside thought i`d do under the spare wheel area. Noticed the washer bottle hose not connected to the wheel. Not to worry, vacuummed all in there. Spare tyre back in,filled washer bottle & connected hose. Cleaned up and decided to take her for a spin.Oh no. Front floor full of water. 2.5 litres worth. WTF !. Hose end was perished where it connects beside steering column to washer unit. What a bitch of a job. This is a 74 L isn`t it. Whoever decided to place the washer line connections beside the steering column needs shooting. Water all under dash ,amongst wiring,in the radio. Not happy Jan. Thugbug ropeable! Much cursing and swearing later, the jobs done and dusted. Phew.Life wasn`t meant to be easy they say. Still, all in all a good little bug i think.

I think the herr dr. ingenieur at VW who was in charge of windscreen washing systems was a cousin of the herr dr. ingeneur who was responsible for rust proofing; both of them were fond of a joke.

I used to get a wet leg when I tried to use the windscreen washer on my old bug. The hose was split in the steering column and the water would end up on my thigh. :spin:

Thanks Modulus, Greasykitchen and Bajachris88. Some joke they thought up.Any of you guys familiar with the removal of that unit? I did unbolt the two cowling bolts fitted to the steering wheel beside the hose junction but that only gave me abot 1/2 inch to play with. Short of fitting an independant washer switch unit I would like to be able to remove the connection temporarily not just to make sure all is ok but to fit two new lengths of hose so that i can be assured that the existing original hoses don`t let me down at a later stage. Thanks
