My Old Splity Utes

1962 model, ex-PMG splitty ute, I stuffed a 220Hp Leyland P76 alloy V8 up it`s bum (yeah it had a little bit of work done to it & was out to 4.7litres) & was able to carry almost anything, almost anywhere, it just happened to be a dam good beach buggy too :-)

68 front beam with 74model disc assys. i stuffed an IRS rear end into it & fitted up 11" rear vented disc brakes as well, twin fuel tanks, full roll cage right through from front tubes to rear tube, winch, etc etc etc those are 12Rs on the back & it normally ran 9.5Rs on the front,(had a flat front tyre that weekend tho so i swapped them over to the little ones)
http://madmatt.bigblog.com.au/data/1/8412/image/mrkombibeach4583020060810131329.jpg

I had it for about 15 years all up & It was the best car i ever owned for offroad ability, It was even better than my Rivmaster off road frame buggy, mainly because the kombi actually turned corners,,, the buggy would rather wheel stand than turn :-)

I know it looks daggy as,,, but there wasn`t much point making it look nice when it spent most of it`s time carrying race minis & 2nd hand shitty old minis & rubbish to the dump & scrap metal & stuff around & then hitting the beach for most of it`s life, it would have just been a waste of a good paint job.
http://madmatt.bigblog.com.au/data/1/8412/image/V8CombieMoretonIs3925020060902183048.jpg

This is a pic of it`s "Sister", i built this one up from a 1965 model bare shell... It was a great little thing, stocko in nearly every way (except for a few little things here & there) fitted it with a mild dak dak 1600 donk & it was a dam good work horse too... We carried my rally Mini to Tasmania & back for the Targa Tasmania rally back in 2002, packed it with 1700kgs of stuff inside & ontop the poor old thing with the 2 of us (Robbo my navigator & me) the race mini on the back, another complete spare engine & gearbox assy, spare front & rear suspension assys, massive tool box, workshop sized floor jack, twin fuel tanks & another 2 jerry cans plus another 20litre drum of water, all out camping gear including a big motha esky, gas BBQ, cups bowls plates, cuttlery etc, sleeping gear & all out clothes for 2 weeks & then all the race spares & equipment, in car video camera, intercom, helmets etc, 2 spare Kombi wheels/tyres, 2 spare minirace whesls/tyres , etc etc etc , the list goes on & on... dam even the mini was packed pretty tight & it also had 2 oversize fuel tanks, & then of course the roof racks with the surfboard ontop ,,, oh & a full sized foam mattress with pillows & sleeping bags etc etc etc
http://miniman.com.au/image/TheUltimateRallyPackage.jpg
http://miniman.com.au/image/PotofGold.jpg

& this is the new version, again it`s another alloy V8 but this time it`s a Lexus quad cam 32v injected V8, not much difference in grunt between this one & the 62 V8 splitty tho, but that`s because this one is a little heavier than the splitty single cab

http://madmatt.bigblog.com.au/data/1/8412/image/ae5012909520080315120837.jpg

very nice, very clean, very smooth & very quiet, it has a .74:1 Albins top gear with those 31.5" rear rubbers & 275Hp at the wheels makes for a very good top end speed,,, not much can keep up with it down the Hi-way
:-) Gav & Paul (previous owners) are credited for all the work to get it to this stage, i`m just carrying on & finishing up a pile of loose & untidy ends with it to make it sweet all over. That is if i can get some time spare from changing gearboxes every month :-)

Great Matt, thanks for the tow car history. The new dc looks the go, she'll be a sweet tow rig, for all the miles you seem to be able to clock up. You want to look into a tranny swap to keep things together. Renault is perfect with the big rubber, worth the effort for the reliability.

11Cab... you sneaky bugga, you busted me dragging off that ferrari !!! ???,,, or were you driving that ferrari ???
:-) that was pretty cool tho, who ever it was i bet he had fun too :-)

Kroozin63... yeah, those were the good ol days :-) I miss them heaps,,, Just imagine over 100mph+ down the surf side beach at Moreton Is, in an old splitty ute, late at night, pitch black, & then flick the lights off & just aim for the light house :-) It`s better than a side show alley ride at the exhibition :-)

Matt-B ,,, there was a porsche one on e-bay sold the other day, i would have grabbed it if i was back in time to bid

But,,, i`m looking very seriously at setting the DC up as a 4x4, with a porsche 4x4 gearbox & maybe a VW syncro front diff & then try to sort the wheel/tyre combo to get the front--rear diff ratios equal... Maybe???,,, I have some big fat Austin Tasman/Kimberly front wheel drive wheel-assys that i can make fit up to the Kombi arms & stuff around with the steering link a tad & it should all work ... what`s your thoughts???

You will have to virtually cut the entire wheel arch out to put the same rubber front and rear. your steering lock wouldn't real flash either. I hope your a big guy cause you need to be to steer a Kombi with anything bigger than 9R's on the front during slow moving or when they are running low pressures.. Have a look at the size of all my uncles and cousins.... there's a reason why lol

Yeah i understand all that, & i`m prepared to do whatever it takes to sort, but firstly i`m trying to find out what the diff is ratio for the 4x4 porsche & the ratio for the front diff of the syncro & see if we can set the tyre-differences to suit,,, what i`m hoping is that the porsche has a zippier diff than the syncro front diff, because that way i might get away with running the smaller front tyres than the back...

I also have a little trick up my sleave for the heavy-ish steering, that really isn`t too much drama at all :-)

& as for steering lock, well, Ausin Kimberly front wheel assys are pretty robust & unbreako,,,& also the kombi wheel base isn`t really that long, so it really shouldn`t be too much of an issue...

http://madmatt.bigblog.com.au/data/1/8412/image/MonsterTruck022817320080526182649.jpg

My 4x4 Duel Cab Mitsubishi canter with motorhome on the back prooved absolutely no problem whatso ever on Moreton Is, it went everywhere & i`m expecting you would have driven those chassis around frazer under the tour busses yeah? not much lock in those things hey? but there is enough, just that the Duel cab Canter wheel base is pretty long which isn`t that good, so , you gain some & you loose some, the Kombi is short enough so it should be ok i hope.

It`s a bit of a pipe dream at the moment , but i`ve actually be wanting to do this sort of mod for quite a few years, but i really wanted it all under a DC Splitty, i just can`t really justify the cost buying & the fixing up of a DC splitty & then it would be classified as sacrilage to do that to one of those now days anyway.

& yeah i`m pretty strong ,,, play squash every week, ride & race Down Hill mountain bikes nearly every sunday & i surf at Byron nearly every thurs, fri & sat :-) But, like i`ve said,,, i have a little trick up my sleave for the steering issue :-) :-) :-)

& someone asked (but i think it was on Matty-Bs thread) about the ford tail lights, I bought that bare body shell for a carton of beer & we skull dragged it out of old mate Claytons back yard at Carina about 25 years ago & then did her all up, & i had it for yonks but i eventually sold it to a mate (he just wouldn`t take no for an answer) he then sold it to another fella (Ian) who used to buy & sell & carry bush rocks in it for a few years , he then sold it to a guy in camp hill, (just across from the fire stn) , & then i bought it back off him, so yeah we did that ford rear light thing to it. (sadly tho i have to admit)

some hippy trippy guy has that ute in Lismore now tho

Edit--> & yeah i know what a massively jacked up Kombi with 9Rs on the front is like,,, that`s what the V8 kombi had & with 12Rs on the back, i did all that over 25 years ago, but i soon realised it wasn`t much chop & dropped the whole lot back down to a reasonable height & i just put up with the tyres rubbing the guards a bit here & there on the big bumps on corners etc

I`m onto the net looking up porsche 4x4 rear diff ratios now as i allready have a syncro front diff :-)

Yeah Matty, 4x4 would be pretty cool just for the sake of doing it really,,,, someone once told me that the VW factory actually made a few "Prototype 4x4 bay window kombis but i don`t know how true that is,,, & then all those times i do silly things like driving down a drive way or due-y grassy back yard ... in the pits at race tracks with wet grass down a slight slope... or even settled upon a little mound along side the road with a small hump where one rear wheel is light,,, wheel spin in reverse,,, not carrying anything in the back & just not thinking where i`m putting the kombi when i don`t have any people around to help nudge the thing a tad to get some grip etc... so,,, 4x4 would make it easier on my girlfriend so she wouldn`t have to hop out & push if we ever got stuck in silly places like that hey? :-)

& yeah i`d love to catch up this week too man, it`s been a while hey? but i`m off to Byron surfing wed night & back sat arvo

i`ll bell you when i`m up your way next & we`ll catch up & talk motha Phuka sheds, & V8 4x4 Kombi utes :-)

LSD FTW!! Empty van with nothing in it running 12R's with lockrite LSD and lifts a rear wheel some 10-12" off the ground and reverses straight up an embankment.

X-I-TED you haven't lived till you've gone fast in a Kombi and I'm not talking about straight line either.......

What type of LSD is the lockrite? is it like the detroit? or is it a plate type or a spiral gear type or pall type or what? because i really don`t want a tight diff that makes my Kombi push around tight corners, (been there, done that) the beauty of an open diff is that it`s "streetable" & car parks & such & also good in the tight (not so boggy) sandy tracks, hence another reason why i`d like a 4x4 set up with viscous diff between front & rear axles & also was thinking of just setting up air locker type diffs front & rear,, i`ll go & look up "lockrite" on the net now tho because if it`s a nice diff then i`ll use them instead of setting up the air lockers

My uncle has a genuine ZF diff centre in his dual cab. Works just as you think a ZF would... perfect!!

As for the lockrite LSD I cannot remember exactly what type of centre it is. Been a very long time since I even looked at one.(like 10 or more years)

The lock rite is an ok diff but relatively agressive. I had one for a few years, problem could have been my engine was quite camy due to huge o/lap with single throttle body,so was real hard on cv's and driveline when the diff would suddenly lock. My bus went up Kings bore track easy with the lockrite and Porsche 6 cyl engine, loaded ! ZF is supreme. Air locker that Volksmod now do would also be fine, I talked to Laurie about doing this about 10 years ago. VR had a client with a syncro wit triple diff locks, among other things, and I had tested the lockers with each diagonal wheel a meter airbourne !!! [why is it that slippery grass can often catch us out?] The ability to lock on comand would be great, you wouldn't need the weight of 4wd, just a locker.

And yep thats a factory 4wd bay !!!!

Read THE VW SYNCRO STORY – Simon Holloway
at http://www.club80-90syncro.co.uk/Syncro_website/TechnicalPages/_THE%20SYNCRO%...

There are some great prototype shoys and exploded views of drivetrain etc..
__________________________________________

The first of the five prototypes was completed at the end of 1975. The vehicles had semi automatic gearboxes similar to the “Stick Shift” Beetles. These were coupled via a torque converter and a hydraulic clutch to a 70BHP 2-litre engine, which had just been developed for the VW/Audi military “Iltis” vehicle. The system had friction type diff locks & an extra lever in the cab allowed it to be driven in either 2 or 4 wheel drive. Extensive modification was required to the front axle to accommodate the differential & drive shafts (and rerouting of the heating system). These vehicles had drum brakes all round.

Under body plating was applied & the exhaust was modified (tailpipe through bumper!) to give extra ground clearance. Addition of 16” wheels also helped increase ground clearance.

The 5 prototypes undertook extensive testing & produced very positive results.
However the project was already attracting a lot of resistance from within VW itself. Amazingly the VW marketing guru’s did not believe there was a market for 4WD utility vehicles in the future – not one of their best marketing decisions!!

Despite this Gustav & Henning managed keep their enthusiasm & continued the project.

At the launch of the Audi built “ Iltis” in 1978 a Bay 4WD prototype was also present. During trials before the German Armed Forces the Bay 4WD ran rings around the Iltis. Despite this the VW Chiefs still decided that the vehicle would not go into series production.

Significantly Ferdinand Piech, (then head of technology with Audi – later boss of VW) was at that demonstration & also saw other film & pictures of the prototypes performance during testing & during its expeditions to the Sahara & as a support vehicle for the Audi Quattro.

Aaron who has the 20B rotor powered bay,
uses the AWD 969Porsche 6 speed in his bus,
but does not use the front diff.

Anyhow, the diff ratio is very tall. Opposite to what you want...4.0 or 4.2 from memory.
Albins do make other diff ratios but they will make you squeel when you get a price.

With tall tyres you WILL need a lower ratio diff.
The Renault tranny may be your best option, but prob not pratical for AWD.
Hmmmmm.

There are plenty of parts available for the bus tranny to make it stronger,
but I am not sure what your future holds power-wise.
Diff locks or ZF, synchro tranny with Albins/weddle gears....

If you go with the Renault tranny you will need to cut the torsion bar housing down and shorten the torsion bars as well as modifying the body to have clearance. It is a lot of work but they are on very strong tranny!! 9.25" crownwheel from memory.

The torsion doesn't need cutting for the stronger 4 speed, there is one in my old dc now.
I have ratio's and info if interested.

From my breif ride in your old DC Matt with the 4 speed fitted it is still not geared right as i don't believe Mark even uses 1st unless it is really steep etc , plus 4th and the diff ratio of these boxs ( 4 speed ) combine for a high revving cruise , which with todays current fuel prices makes it a bit of a mongrel box apart from it's strength

yeah dont stuff around with the 4 speed. You set the 5 speed up like a synchro box with 1st as a low range type gear. then space the rest of the ratios out nicely with 5th set as a nice RPM for your engine type gear LOL.

It`s a bit like you`re dammed if you do & dammed if you don`t tho, i`d dearly love the 4x4 package, but it does add a hell of a lot more weight , not to mention the extra strain on the gearbox,,, but if i leave this box in & set up another one with a pile of good Albins gears & a diff lock, then i still just have a kombi with a diff lock,,, i was keen to do the 4x4 thing for 2 reasons, one to have something a little different & 2ndly to make sure i don`t get stuck some where stupid (mud/sand/wetgrass etc) I used to take a heap of people with me on trips in the old splitty so "If" we ever got stuck then there was allways people ready to push (but that only happened once) but now-days it`s normally just me & the g/friend & i`m sure she won`t want to push this big heavy pig out of a mud bog or sand pit

i`m still playing with the idea of building another complete car tho,,, maybe leave this one how it is & build another with full 4x4, diff locls, the whole nine yards,,, it`s only money & you only live once hey?

Yeah mate, only live once, throw a diff lock in this one with a tough tranny, and build one like your avatar for the 4wd fix. Take a bit of stopping !!!
