Whats It Worth? 1968 Bug
Quite clean 1968 bug, still the 67 look alike. Large headlights and small tail/blinker lights. Chrome bumpers with the pipes. Registered til december
this year. Good working engine. Paint needs a buff. Minimum rust.
All complete. All the white interior plastics and chrome all around.
What do you think? Rough estimates ok.

Is this an advertisement for the car or are you asking people what a particular car might be worth?
If it's an advertisement for a car, please refer to the buying and selling rules.
If you're asking what value your car may be worth, between $1 and $3000.

Beetle - Whats it worth????
Hi
Give Us the engine and chassis number
I have seen at the nationals years ago
a white beetle that was a 1968 model
but looked like a 1967 model...
it was a one owner and was bought at a Sydney VW dealer in 1968..
it had been imported from Germany
and offloaded in Sydney...
there was a story attached...
the actual 1967 model beetle was the largest selling beetle in the USA.. it had round push button door handles
amongst other things that made it a one year only beetle
if its one of those its rare in Australia...
I look at any car that I was going to buy
how much it is going to cost to replace all the worn parts..
so if its a low mileage car its worth a bit - to purists
if its as good as you say.. roadworthy and good condition
$1000- $2000- $3000- ??
but realistically $1000 to $2000
unregistered drops the price to $500 to $1000 -
take off money for any problems...
best of luck
LEE

Its a 11805----
So its a rather early one.
Its a F engine number too.
Its not the one your thinking of, and if i remember correctly its got the door opening button under the handle, not a push button.
Its definately not a $500 bug. I dont see any cheap $500 bugs in any sort of good condition. Those sort of cars go to sims..

Volkswagen model year...
A 1968 MODEL beetle was made from 1st AUGUST 1967 to 31st JULY 1968 inclusive...
This is the Volkswagen Model year...
so, if Your beetle was made in July 1967 its a 1967 model
if it was made after the 1st August 1967 its a 1968 MODEL beetle...

Did they still use the big headlights and small taillights? As far as i understand this stopped at the end of 67. From a catalogue, all the 68 model
stuff is different, similiar to my 1970 bug.
What your saying there is that it should be the same as a 67 until july 1968.
And thats what this bug is, looks like a 67 model, and not a so called 68 model with all the different items like my 1970.

VW started all the changes in 1965
Large glass - from Germany sold worldwide
1966 flat hubcaps disc brakes beetles sold in UK
1967 beetle in the US had vertical headlamps and towel rail bumpers..
1st of August 1967 = 1968 VW YEAR MODEL = 12 volts
new tail lamps vertical headlamps
no beetles sold in the us had disc brakes...
All Beetles made in Australia until mid 1968 were the older models like a 1964-65-66-67
there were some beetles fully imported in early 1968..
so they could look like the old model beetle..??
the early model looking beetle was sold in Germany for many years, it was a big seller in Germany..
if it was fully made in Australia it could also be the early model.. maybe one of the last..??
if its an aussie made beetle with a 1968 model chassis number it could also be rare..
1968 was a mixed up year for VW in Australia..
VW AUstraliasia had stopped making beetles
and was being taken over..
Assembly of beetles began in late 1968 [I think]
You also need to check whether the beetle was made inn Western Germany or Australlia..
cheers
LEE

if its a 68 which it is from the chassis # and it has the old smoothy bumpers, upright 12volt headlights and the oval shaped 60s taillights then its
an imported 1200 euro bug if there all original parts
ive seen a few of these around oz
but it may just be a mish mash of parts that someone has thrown togther to

I would pay good money for that car if it is a large window early lights car.
3g would be sight unseen, but 5g plus for a good clean car...sky is the limit if rust free.

Could be an Aussie Custom model, they were still being made in late '68.
"Deluxe" model Aussie beetle was discontinued in March 1968, replaced by fully imported German made (big windows, upright lights) which were sold
alongside "Custom" model Aussie beetles (smaller windows, sloping headlights) until September 1968.
Assembly of CKD kits from Germany (big windows, upright lights) began in August 1968, by September they had assembled enough stock, so that is when
full imports & Aussie Customs stopped.
Regards,
Matt.

very hard to tell if its aussie assembled car but i think it looks like a UK import
that interiors an odd one altho it may be redone, never seen one like it
but yes its very similar to euro 1200 standards
but its certainly worth saving
without knowing its running condition id say anywhere from $1500-2500
engines very oily

I had a '69 model standard, with upright hlights and early bumpers, horn grills etc. Also 6volt system with 12volt diameter gen and starter,
headliner only in the center roof section, no glove box door, res fuel tap and no chrome on body or windows, and 1200 cc. Looked much like those
above.

Didn't VW Aus get rid of a bunch of cars in 68/9 that were assembled from remnants.. They had very little trim and were very basic.. eg.. no pillar
trim, no glove box lid, nuts and bolts interior.. They were called a VW Standard or a VW Custom... Just a thought

Do the earlier guards bumpers etc fit on later model bugs?
How can you tell what year the actual body is?

I have the '67 one year only import and can confirm some things.
External door Handles definitely have round push button, and only drivers side has key hole.
The internal lock control is the later style push / pull in the window frame to rear of door.
recess behind handle on exterior of door is smaller than 1500 beetle.
engine cover similar, to 1500 beetle from '68 and on, but more defined shape. The rear apron is different, and the cover latch has a really nice
looking plate with recess to lock onto, rather than the bent metal tang welded onto the 1500 beetle apron.
Larger windows all around like 1500 beetle.
Disk brake B/J front end, although single circuit brakes, with square reservoir mounted on ledge behind spare wheel.
Mine has early head lights and I once read they were made with both early and late, relative to the surplus parts leftover from the '66 and earlier
year model VW was running out.
I can post some pics of the differences tomorrow if it helps.
Wayne.
