can anyone tell me (while my hands are dirty hehehe)


anyone know how many shims are supposed to sit on the fan in a beetle? i know there is probably a small difference between individual cars but how many on the underside and how many under the nut/washer?

not too sure how these should go as the last fan f'ed up because of not enough shims!

any help would be greeeeeeat!:D:D

actually... not too big a need to know now, as the new fan is too big for the fan housing ive got! annoyance!:mad: so now ive got 2 questions :)

1) is a superbug fan housing bigger than than non-superbug fan housing and therefore can my bigger fan fit in it without scratching etc (the fan is not bigger by diameter, just bigger by depth)

2) how many shims inside and out blah blah blah!;);)

any help would be much appreciated!

Wish I could. From the manuals I study it depends on the tension of the belt as to whether you add or remove shims.

I can't even get the nut off to remove the belt and pulleys to put a generator on I've cleaned up:(

I do the scew driver in the slot bit and all, but can't budge it:jesus

Jenz is right - just fit them on until the belt is the right tension, tight but so you can move it a little when grasping both sides of the belt in between your thumb on one side and your fingers on the other (if that makes sense!?)
Its a bit of a trial and error. I have to change my pulley shortley!

Jenz - tried a liberal dose of WD40??

Yes, the doghouse fan will not fit in the early style fanhousings. The shims are used to set the fan-to-housing clearance. Put as many as it takes on the generator side of the fan to prevent rubbing.

Well i changed mine today since it blew up on the way to work.

I put 4 or 5 in the middle, between the two peices of the pulleys.

Yeah well i got all week off now!
SO NER!!

Oh but i am sick so that kinda ruins it... :(

How high?
Dunno - i havent put my tacho back in.
About 5-5.5k prolly. Maybe more.
Its the second pulley that has exploded on me... but they last about 6 months or so. They seem to be a big weak point...


edit--> its been dying for a bit - rattling and so on. Thought it might have held in for the rest of the week tho... rude bastard of a pulley... :mad:
I have been taking it easy - the one time i ask for some acceleration and it gives up the ghost...

Thanks ppls:) figured out the right amount... but had to buy a smaller fan 2nd hand for now... holidays soon so im going the upgrade (to the shinier chrom-ier doghouse and friends....)

the last fan i had on there got eaten through by the washer... not happy jan!:cussing

My belt was too tight and was the probable cause of the bearings going in the generator as it was fine until I'd been driving then it started making terrible noises after a while. There were way too few shims and no give in the belt:jesus

Also learnt that shims are used to give required clearance for the fan so it doesn't hit or scrape anything as mentioned here.

Hmmm, it's all a learning but the hard way:o

Generator I've cleaned up is not charging but at least no horrible noises so bearings OK. Pity it doesn't work, have it looking so sweet externally

Damn can't win

Can you buy new 6 volt gennies and regulators?

before you go buying a new genny jenny hahahahahahaha haaaaa huh uh oh. OK. before you get another generator make sure its not something simple like worn brushes.

Grey 57 is checking it out for me. Oops no he is putting bearings from a 6volt he has into the one we took out which was at least charging, but suggested I find out if new ones are available. Still have the non-charging one on her.

He tried polarizing the gennie as well with no luck

Hmmm, the trials and tribulations of keeping Bel 6volt, 36hp

Looked online and all the results of my search were on 6volt-12volt conversions, so encouraging :(

Jen the fan end bearing was completely fried. Changed it over for a good one so it should be good to go.

One thing for anyone, this 6V gennie has 3 wires coming out of it not the usual 2. I know that the heavy one from the brush holder goes on one terminal on the regulator and one goes on the other terminal. But what about the 3rd wire??
Any clues.
