Posting here so others may be able to answer. Not sure if it is an "L" Bug box, compliance plate just says 7/72 VW, there is some other info..112
2 517 396..... although the 9 in the last group of numbers is a bit hard to decipher, may be an 8, these numbers are stamped above the "LBS"
on the compliance plate, the clutch release conection is on the top lh of the box, I have heard that there is a number somewhere on these boxes so if
someone can point me in the right direction I could give you that inf. Sorry to be so vague but lets see what others come up with. I'm in Newcastle.

Read the code off the bottom, if it is an AP it is what he is after.
He doesn;t actually need what he is calling an L Bug or single side plate box he is just chassing the 3.88 R & P which the twin side plate AP box
will have or if it is single side plate which it shouldn't be if it is the original one.

Code? off the bottom of what?, there dosn't seem to be such a thing on the compliance plate and unfortunatly the rest of the car is long gone, should
I be looking on the box somewhere?

yeah on the bottom of the box stamped running front to back will be some letter followed by some numbers.

You have to get underneath as the stamped pad faces the ground more or less. Between the axle flanges and the start of the bolt-on gear train housing.
Grab a rag to rub off grease 'n' grime. Being a '72 it might have either a DSC or SSC (Single Side Cover) in it. On an SSC the starter motor side
is the one that is cast as part of the housing.

First, sorry bout coming back late, been away for the weekend.
Numbers are........H4347984
If the side cover is the part bolted to the box and through which the ax;les go, then it's a DSC.
Hope this helps and if you have already sourced one from Robert then at least I will now know a bit more.

Put it this way, single side plate means where the arms (or axles) go into the side of the gearbox, is that one side of the gearbox can bolt off and
the other side is fixed. Double side plate means you can take off the plates on each side where the arms go in.
