Subi Boxes
Ok question has probably been asked before but.
Vehicle 89 T3 Vw Caravelle
Recently bought our new daily driver with the NA EJ25 SOHC engine out of a 97 Forester. Unsure even if the 97 Forester had this engine?
Matched to a 4 speed trans from a T3, there is nothing wrong with it at present, but as all cog heads do.
The 4 speed is fine cruises @ 110-115 @ 3200Rpm
I can still knock it back to 3rd from 100 odd k's and it gets mobile quick enough. But??
I still wouldnt mind a 5 speed or even 6 speed?
I wonder if the Subi box can be used with this combo of engine and vehicle?
If not what options are there?
I have heard the talk of Porsche and $$$. Scarey stuff.
Cheers
Keep the steering and the propulsion seperate . Still a Kombi...
It's all good, until it's bad, i suppose

yeah at 97 i think the forester would've still been using the ej20. maybe it's from a 97 outback but then it would probably be a dohc. in aust
from memory the ej25 didn't go sohc until 98/98. could've been sourced 2nd hand from japan.
when you say 4 speed do you mean 1st granny gear and 4 normal gears?
subaru entire range went all wheel drive in about 99 so that'd make it even harder (that's if it's possible in the first place, i.e. with the older
front wheel drive gearboxes).
if you want to get a bit better cruising rpms or most use out of the ej25 maybe you could try slightly taller tyres or go an aftermarket r&p
(4.1:1) but i've only seen these in germany. http://www.syncro-bernd-jaeger.de/ENGLISH/Schneller/schneller.html
or if it's strength you're worried about maybe a true 4 speeder from a 80-83 aircooled T3?

I just put a 0.70:1 ratio 4th gear set in my kombi gearbox. So it's like a 5 speed with no 4th. It works pretty well because my engine is quite
torque and generally overpowered

KombiCountry
Clarity via previous owner, Yan from WolfsburgMotors = conversion done in 97, engine EJ25 from a 2001 forrester.
Not a Syncro box 1st,2nd,3rd,4th and reverse.
So that would make it DOHC?
Yeh Wes, aint you running a V6? Anyway Yan strengthened the box and added taller 4th gear. Tyres are 70 profile on a 15" rim 15x6.
JVL is this only option? I was loking at porsche 914 box on US Ebay.
Is the cost worth the effort? Will i run into problems with speed sensor and all that shit? Currently Tacho seems to work finr idles at 900rpm and
runs at 100K's at about 28-2900Rpm.
Does anyone know what stock subi Rpm was at 100K's?
I was thinking something like the old 85-89 liberty or are these the same AWD technology?
Cabt u just rip the VC out of diff and then run gearbox and not front diff?
Thanks Guys

M8.....G50 for a good day every day driver
UN5 buggy racers use them *strong*
L box with 1st and 2nd Albins and a highway gear at 4th?Reliable.....wouldnt need a 5th
Steve Carter would be the man to talk to on a G50.
just some options to play with.....
