1968 bug wont start-help

I have just bought a 1968 1500 bug, and being a vw novice i am having problems.

The bug looks to have a very new battery but in cold/wet weather it will not start, yo can trn the key and the startr turns the engine but it just wont fire up.

If i jump it and give it the entra pwer of another car after a short time it stats and is happy to run.

Once hot you can turn it off and it will restart, but leave it overnight and no joy.

Can anyone shead any light to what my problem may be?

Get higher CCA battery, as big as will physically fit.

Sounds like the starter motor is using all the power from the battery so there isn't enough to start the engine..

Cold weather really effects batteries...

Champion or Exide batteries are excellent

12 volt

I'll have to check the number of CCA and battery number
it has recessed posts for a VW..

I always get them from Big W..

id go over ur ignition system to and make sure its all in order
a tired coil, worn out points, cap, rotor etc will make it hard to start in damp/cold too

for a genny equipped 1500 bug thats got nothing more than an average stereo u would need a about a 350-380cca battery
u dont wanna go to big it will load the genny up trying to keep it charged

thanks for all your help. I pulled out the spark plugs to find them old and full of carbon, and going to treat it to a new rotor and dist cap and leads, the battery is a 320cca so its now fully charged and hoping its gonna start when its all back together.
