Is the Aussie VW scene expensive?
Hi guys
i'm wayne i live in NE England i joined your forum a couple of months ago and have finally got off my ar*e to put a thread up.
my question is this; is the Aussie VW Scene as expensive as it is here in the UK? The prices of VW particularly Kombis or buses as we call them over
here is mental!
I drive a 70 early bay myself and ones done to the standard i've got mine are going for obout 10k sterling and mines no where near show standard.
Spitties forget it!! 23 windows LHD are exchanging hands for 25-30K+
I just wondered if the uk market has made your market increase seen as we both drive on the proper side of the road and i've seen many sites over here advertising aussie imports? I have a lot of family in NZ on the
North island and my cousin drives a late bay there, He's seen a vast increase in people trying to ship them overseas which must p*ss local people off
trying to buy local projects.
Hope this isn't a sore point! Thought i'd ask you guys your opinions?

It's getting more expensive for us to buy cars back off you guys when they go overseas!!
All depends on the relative value of currency. There are more and more cars nowdays that have had big dollars spent on them to get them into tip top
shape that you see in shows etc. Also the value for purchasing a project car is going up as well so that has to be factored into the cost etc.
Personally I don't like to see cars going overseas as this forces up the price for spare parts in the local markets and it usually only makes people
who aren't enthusiests richer (IMHO). But that is the way of life and I am getting over it .
As a pom, you are in a better position to purchase a good car from us for 1/2 of the price that you'd spend in you homeland to get the same things
done. Then you just have to factor into the equation shipping costs. Still works out better financially from you end.
One thing I noticed when I was overseas on my honeymoon, is that the prices for things were similar when buying overseas it's just that spending 4
pounds on something that costs 4 dollars back home is really costing me 12 dollars Aust. That kind of puts things into perspective!

Looking at prices in Ultra VW
Your parts and cars do see much cheaper than over here...
although you canstill find the odd beetle going cheap..
the Kombis transporters Micro buses and twin cab utes
are over the top....
Prices of parts do seem to be very expensive over Your way....
its a bit hard to compair parts made in UK Germany Denmark Sweden - chine taiwan and Brasil...
I find the USA made stuff is OK,,,
evwparts, CIP1, CBPerformance- Wolfsburg west,

Don't forget that over here cars don't fall apart with rust at the same rate as in the UK (up here in Queensland at least). No salt put on the roads
in winter. So the quality of old,non-restored vehicles would be better.Your best bet would be to buy as much as you can when you first arrive as
you'll be getting a good exchange rate as you'll be using money that you earned in England. Once you've settled into the Aussie way of life and
you're earning dollars and you stop converting everything into pounds to see what the value of everything is you'll then see it doesn't matter as
you'll then realise that a dollar here will buy you (practically) what a pound does in England. So buy as much as you can as soon as you can......Now
I've just read that back and it makes sense to me

Put it this way, move to America :P
Every new bit i bought for my vw is imported from there. I'm a tight arse, but i also don't miss the chance to save literally hundreds of $$. Bits
are readily available and cheap if you got a credit card, the internet, and can wait till the postman brings it around a fortnight later.
vw's though, its a matter of luck whether they are cheap or not. 2 yrs ago, i bought a 67 baja bug for $750, yr after, i bought a 1969 original
stickshift beetle (minus motor) which was in better nick than the 67' for $250, and its been great so far.

yes, We are lucky in one respect that so many VWs
are still on the road over here..
Most split window Kombis are usually very rusted
but they are worth the money to fix up...
Many beetles still end up at the wreckers...
The metal on our beetles lasts longer than the rubber items...
the reverse happens in the uK... lol

over your way to over here.
The 23 wondows certainly sound to be similar value taking the exchange rate into account.
I've just seen a swedish RHD 23 window for sale at 19k sterling but needed a full respray, prep etc and interior overhal to make it shiny, so your
looking at 24k when done. similar to your prices.
I had the chance to buy a 21 window about 10 years ago for 5k  wish i
had a time machine i'd be loaded now Ithink i'll stick with my
early bay its the way forward i think

prices of splittys have gone over the top...............driven up by idiots paying stupid prices because they think they are rare.........as well as
workshops charging a bomb for resto's.
