What year?
Hi all,
Was just wondering if anyone can tell me what year the oval first came out. I've found one but the guy said it was a '53.
Cheers james

Ah cool, thanks. It's unrestored, I've been told that he has all the bits for it. I've seen some photos, I think it's gonna be a big job but the
shell doesn't look to bad,. It's still got the org engine. I need to see it in the flesh before I make any plans.

Almost certainly a private import. Regent Motors did bring in some '53 models late in 1953 (I have sources that say there were only 31 imported, plus
some CKD packs), but the FCAI did not record any Australian Volkswagen sales for 1953.
In NSW at least, Volkswagens were not released for sale until Easter 1954. They made their public debut at the Royal Easter Show that year.

Yes you are right, the very early ones were 1953s. The only question is when the 1954s arrived.
I don't know how the situation worked in Victoria, but in NSW the first VWs were unloaded straight off the ship from Europe at Woolloomooloo, and
driven directly to the Lanock Motors/Grenville Motors distribution yard at Rushcutters Bay, where they were prepared for dispatch to other dealers or
on to the customer.
The first shipments to arrive, prior to the VW's NSW debut at Easter 1954, would have been 1953s (they all had 1131cc engines). Local CKD assembly in
Melbourne began in June 1954, but the kit parts would have been rather older, having been shipped in months before. The 36-bhp 1192cc engine wasn't
seen Australia until late 1954, for example.
This notice is from the Sydney Morning Her;ad's Easter Show Suppliment, 1954.

And in the same suppliment, this was the first-ever Volkswagen ad published in Sydney, for Lanock Motors.
Not how the tail-lights have the 1953-style top lens.
