Mk2 Sabre **Sold**
About car and history
A DBR kit that echo’s styling typical of a 1960’s le Mans special. Similarities can be found to Ferrari 250 lm, Ford Gt40 and Porsche 904. In
both concept and specification The Mk2 Sabre would have its strongest links to the 904 sharing both a similar drive layout , boxer engine and fibre
glass shell. Built in Brisbane at Fortuna Engineering by and for first owner, the sabre is a trophy winning example of a unique car that includes
'best car on show' at the ‘Australian component car club national Show, 1993.’
Not just a pretty face the Sabre successfully competed in events including Targa Tasmania 1997 (Footage on official DVD) and Leyburn sprints;
finishing 2nd and 1st in class respectively. Car remains in Targa Tasmania set-up with engine tune refined for road use without loss of power. Even
with a racing history the car features many “luxury” items and a fully trimmed / insulated interior, for a comfortable and feasible daily drive.
Car comes complete with build / maintenance history receipts, manuals spares and dyno charts.
The car is truly in excellent condition but buyer should be aware of the following.
Air con needs re-gassing.
Tyres have passed their prime ( Still have 90% of their tread and have worn evenly but lack of use has made them go hard)
If you are much taller than 6ft you may not fit in.

Got the Targa vid with this car, makes my MK2 look VERY amateurish.
Beautiful finish and selling HEAPS (10K) cheaper than similar units on the market at the moment. Makes me sweat on what price to sell mine at.
C'mon AVD'ers, you know my car and enough of you have expressed a lot of interest in it, buy this weapon and go racing (or at least provide me with
a challenge for best kit car at the shows LOL!).

WOW! This is an amazing looking car. Just a few quick questions for you!
What would be required to register this vehicle in Victoria?
How do you go part wise? Are most of the components custom made or are they readily available/replaceable if needed?
How old is the motor and what sort of condition is it in?
Are there any other items/parts that would need attention for a roadworthy besides those mentioned above?
How's she go on the petrol?

Hi Sam i hope these answers help you
I dont know what a Victorian rego would require that a QLD one wouldn't, but i do know that the kit was registrable in victoria when it was new.
Parts are mostly standard from various doner cars or off the shelf performance parts.
Examples being;
Suspension and Steering VW type 3
Engine Subaru
Rear brakes and door handles Fiat
brake booster landrover
Locks Falcon
Windscreen Celica
The Difficult custom bits are things like the
Extractors
Piping
wiring loom
Bracketing
interior
Selector/gearstick
Replacing Body parts though could be a problem if you were to crash the car. I asked the same question of the DBR owner when I first bought her and
his reply was this " If you crash her walk around the site with a bucket and glue the pieces back together". 
The age of the motor would have to be of mid 90's vintage
It only has done 31,000ks as far as i know and always using Mobile 1 synthetic. but i will ask the original owner for you. The engine sounds and
performs perfectly, no leaks , no fuming.In fact going by its last Dyno run its only 1kw down on the latest Impreza NA engine which is rated at
110kw/6400. Even though she has done minimal millage i would change the cam belt before doing any major events. I think subarus standard replacement
schedules for the cam belts is every 100,000ks.
The car really is in great condition, I would be very surprised if there was anything that would be need attention to pass a roadworthy. In fact the
tires I mentioned as something to be aware of would pass without a problem. I just wouldn't want somebody to go racing on them because the compound
has gone a bit hard.
I have always Run the car on premium, But i cant give you exact consumption figures. I would be very surprised if it used more than 9l per 100km.
Having said that the engine has been tuned when on full throttle to run a 12:1 air fuel ratio.
I believe 14.7:1 is optimal for a lean burn, and some where between 13:1 to 12:1 for peak power and safety , when pre detonation and heat could be a
concern. In short , shes not doing global warming any favors but its set up best for the engine.

I will call Vic Roads today to find out what is involved in the registration process and just give my insurance company a call as well. Hopefully if
everything seems straight forward I'll give you a buzz at some stage over the next few days.

Hey Bruno,
I have contacted about five separate insurance companies and not one of them are keen. I will keep trying over the next few days and see if I can come
up with a solution. If I can't find one best of luck with selling this amazing vehicle.
Also i checked with Vic Roads in regards to registration. They said it just needs to pass a Vic road worthy and then it will be registered as normal
down here (under the same make as it was in Qld)

Hey...I've called Shannon's but because I am not a member of a car club or motor sport club they said they wouldn't be able to help me. I am fairly
young as well (21) so this probaly would also not help. I had this problem once I got my licence, most of the cars I liked were unique (either rare,
old or highly modified) and the only times i could get insurance, it cost around 1/3 of the value of the car which ruled it out.
Thanks though guys. I'm going to keep trying to find a way and I hope I don't have wait a few more years (again) before I can get a special ride.

Hey Bizzare I've tried 'just car'....no go....they don't insure 'kit cars' unfortunately. (but thanks for the suggestion)
Hey koolkarmakombi...I'm looking into this now...I live in Geelong (Vic) and from a quick Google search there aren't any general clubs...only
Holden, Ford, etc. ones. But this was only a quick search. I'm going to make some calls over the next few days and see what i can find.

Try http://www.vwclub.com.au ... The Sabre MK2 is officially a Volkswagen Type3
Modified Production Vehicle, so counts as a VW.
$65 for a years membership is well cheap if it allows you to insure. Mine is on agreed value with Shannons, no car club membership but ...well lets
just say I was 21 when you were 6. 
You will not regret the purchase of this car so long as you don't mind a lot of attention, and have plenty of spare time for questions wherever you
go.

Couple of questions from seriously potential buyer (my brother):
What stud pattern are the wheels?
Assumed front radiator location? What type?
EJ20 Quad?
CAMS approved (cage etc.)?
Why and with what did you block the rear side air intakes?
Is the "shaker" full of air box/filters or can it be replaced by something lower and smoother?
When was it last rego'd?

Hi Mick
Sorry that its taken so long to reply to your question.
Im currently in Tassie sorting out our new home.
I think the stud patern is ither VW or fiat, but they are definetly a 4 stud set up. I'll check with the previous owner, He will know for sure since
he machined the current wheels. Dont worry though its not as crazy as it sounds he was machining up wheels professionaly.
The radiator is positioned at the front and takes cold air from the front grill. It vents both from the Gt40 styled ducts on the "bonnet" and a
ducted vent underneath. I believe the radiator has been cut down, re tanked amd sourced from a commodore.
The Motor is definatly a Ej20 subaru variant, as for what it is from i cant tell you. By quad cam I mean two cams per bank, making four cams in
total.
The roll cage had to meet extra criteria for the car to be eligable for Targa amd other events. I believe that these criteria are stipulated by
CAM's, Again when i get back I'll check this with the original owner.
The side ducts are blocked by metal grills, they dont actualy block the ducts. You could remove them easily.
The shaker does hold an air box and air filter pod, But you could lower it if you choose to. I think i know what you are thinking of Mick because i
wanted to do the same but couldnt bring by self to damage any paint work. Personaly I would be picking up air from the side ducts ( hi preasure) and
expelling air from where the shaker currently sits as you have mentioned but lower ( low preasure ) This would have the added benifit of avoiding heat
soak if you set it up right and look much better in my opinion.

On the plus side its gone to an historic formula V racer who i think will be looking after her well.
Dino I'll catch up with the original owner some time this week and I'll find out about those vents for you.
Still going to Tassie, but now that the sabre has a new home i get the feeling my wife will want the girlified Bug Ive been promising her.

DAMN, DAMN, DAMN!!!!
Bro sold his Skyline two weeks ago (deposit payed by new owner the day before) and then got hit by a taxi in Cairns. Just got it back from the
panelbeaters and handed over the keys yesterday, called me this morning to go check this MK2 out.
Oh well, such is life. Good luck to the new owner and I hope he members up on here so I can keep track of this car.
Bruno, if you wouldn't mind PMing me I'll give you my contact details to pass on as I have loads of info on the MK2 (including copies of the
original engineering drawings thanks to another AVD kitcar fan) and am trying to track down all 24 of them (got 7 so far!).
