59' resto...
well this is my first resto post.. i brought this lil number off a guy after spotting it in the background of another ebay ad... it seemed incomplete
at the time as it was stripped of lights bumpers etc but all was hidden inside.. i ended up gettin it for $900..
the car is pretty much rust free with only one spot i can find having anything significant and for a car thats lived on the coast of portland its
whole life i think thats great.. anyway ive made a start on it finally after a long time of sitting and really loving it..
so heres how i brought it..
and after i gave it a wash..
so what iv done is removed the body from the pan, removed the motor and wheeled the pan out of the shed, it was covered in dirt and grease so out came
the degreaser and i gave it a soak before high pressure washing it, i removed most of the shit so i can disassemble it further to send it to the
blasters..
so here it is nice and greasy..
and after a bit of a clean..
excuse the pics.. on my phone in a hurry so there pretty dodge.. there is barely any rust at all in the pan.. only a lil pin hole in the battery tray
where its a lil thin.
ill post some more pics of the body when i can..
and here are my two parts cars..
so hopefully this thread keeps me motivated.. cheers.

seems unecessary to wreck what looks like two solid and complete early 60's bugs for the sake of the 59......
most stuff missing am sure you could source without too much drama....
goodluck with the resto. looks like a solid base!

oh for sure.. i actually dont need anything off these cars.. maybe just the odd part that came with these.. it was just a good excuse to buy them..
there not as solid as they look though.. trust me, put my foot through the floor of the white one.. twice. and the beryl green is an absolute rust
bucket too.. probably worse than the white one.. runs nice though

oh well had the day off cause i didnt wanna go to school.. ar over it..
sooo did a lil bitta work on the bug.. wanted to focus on the pan but this patch on the body was buggin me,
i had been over the body with a magnet and found a spot that was clearly bogged to the shit house so out came the grinder
andd...
the pics again are shit as i couldnt find one of about ten cameras in the house so yeah.
the bog was about half to 3 quart of an inch thick!
and there was what i was left with.. riveted in.. ahah. ill post some pics what i found behind it.. it was pretty messy.
but hey to be expected on a coastal car ey.
as i mentioned earlier there was some extensive rust in the door jam pillar heres some pics.. i have another on its way from wolfsburg.
and also the last major repair here... obviously some dodgy driving has gone on 
well thats all for now. didnt get shit done but hey.

well when we brought the car it looked to be in pretty good shape and all.. everything seemed solid except the obvious
rust spots but then your really start bashing that hammer around you start to find shit everywhere it seems..
heres todays discoveries..
heres what i found behind that dodgy repair.. SHIT.
and the back..
the opposite side is alot less worse thankgod, seems only one side rusted.. well badly anyway.
lil but more to fill..
also started grinding off the rock hard silastic that some moron had glued the trim on with
cleaned them up.. but one was a lil.... large..
so that's it for the repairs to come i think..
also just wondering if anyone is using these nifty tools.. laps and punches sheet..
creates a lap..
then on the opposite side you can punch to spot weld the repair in..
anyway post your thoughts

just to be technical. im pretty sure you wouldn't call it spot welding when your punching holes. i beleive that would be called a plug weld.

you know, it surprises me the effort some people go to, in order to hide a dodgy repair,
cause for the same amount of effort, they could have fixed it right in the first place.......

they've just riveted the sheet repair on.. which was all smashed and just chocked it full of bog..
very classy. ill be fixing it right this time. man i hate bog.

Hi byronmcmanus59,
I dont know your age but see you are still a student (possible uni). I would just like to give you a pat on the back for getting in and having a go
at what you are doing, this also being because I'm 40+ and know F-all about rust repairs. Also the tools you have access to are great, I'm guessing
your father or relatives are in the trade.
I would have be scared off big time when I saw the new found rust, so all the best and keep the photos coming as we can all learn from others
experiences.

cheers man, im still in high school actually.. doing yr12.. im 17..
yeah my old mans a diesel mecanic and has a SHITLOAD of tools also very handy with just about anything so iv been taught pretty well, he's into
tractors and vintage and veteran cars so has a bit of a background with restos. be good fun i reckon. also been doing a lot of work for my pop on his
car ill post some pics tonight.
i hope to post a few pics everynight of what i do. im gunna be doin a lot of work over a short period of time, but you all know how those plans end
up.
