sloppy gear stick

okay guys heres how it goes i have a 79 model kombi its a 4 speed and the gears are really sloppy, it was like this when i got it but i "think" it may have got worse, when i say this i mean when its in gear its very loose, also i find it is vey hard to get in to 2nd gear on the down shift (down shift only)

any suggestions besides "get a new gearbox" ??

any help would be great thanks :bounce

I can tell you what that is because I had mine done last week.

The coupling near the shift plate needs replacing I originally thought syncros but after chatting here I had the coupling replaced and the shift plate adjusted $25 for the coupling and 1 hour labour made it $80.

And he drives like a brand new bus

I can dig out a piccy of the coupling if you like :thumb

yeah thanks that would be great i was starting to have a heart attack over sourcing a new box, also is this the same solution for the problem im having with second gear ?? i can seem to only get into it when doing less than 40km/hr and even then it still like "pops" in (takes a slight amount of effort to get it to go in)

thanks

VW 2nd Syndrome... yeah sound like the above advice.... slap in a quick shift kit at the same time... only a few bucks more and gives you a heaps shorter throw...

Yeah the second gear thing is the same - if you leave it long enough you'll start getting reverse instead of 2nd.

Good luck

Could be more than just the coupling.
Under the shifter is a small nylon bush, you should change that too while the hands are dirty. Chances are its missing altogether. They are the easy sources of slop out of the way.

Inside the selector housing of the gearbox theres a little plastic bush. Then the actual selector and housing wear from the bazillions of gear changes a gearbox does.

And THEEEEN if you still cant get gears you've got the synchros. Downshifting in 2nd will always be the worst of the lot.
