US spec headlights
Hi,
anyone know if a set of US Spec sloping headlights will pass a NSW rego inspection? All the custom beetles I've seen have run seperate (usually
ugly) front indicators on the wings or bumpers.......

thanks will give that a try
so by US Spec i mean porsche style with the indicator bulbs inside the headlight unit. Would be interested to know if theres anyone out there running
indicators in the headlight unit, and if they've had any rego-related issues??? i've built several cal-lookers in europe and used these lights,
quite common in the UK but not so here ? (I'm guessing because of the rego rules)......thanks |

USA Spec headlamps are sealed beams but they are nasty in My humble opinion..
they don't have the sharp Cut off in Low beam...
but sealed beams sold in Australia do pass Our regulations..
You can buy the clear sloping lenses with semi sealed beams which you can add great H4 white headlamp bulbs...
If You actually buy the complete headlamp unit from the US.. then the sealed beam headlamps will be illegal and annoy hell out of oncoming
drivers...
but whether anyone notices....??
as the sealed beams are behind the clear glass lenses..
actually You could also buy a pair of 7 inch crystal semi sealed beams with the halo parking lamp around the rim..
You can also buy the 7 inch crystal headlamps with amber halo around the rim... now whether they would pass as front blinkers.... I don't
know.....
I've seen a lot of split window kombis with beetle healamps lenses that stick High beam up in the air.... lol
and they are noticable...
so I don't think You'll have any problems...

Have a look at page 6-7 of the Sydney Motor Show Supplement in today's Daily Telegraph. There is a photo of a 'Chamonix 550 Spyder' - it has
US-style VW headlamps.
I used to have them on my '64 Beetle. I bought the complete units from the USA. I kept the new frames, glass, clips, rubbers and rims (and got the
rims rechromed), but threw away the US sealed beam units. I replaced them with Australian Hella H4 halogen units, and used the small bulbs as parking
lights. I kept the stock VW amber blinkers on the top of the mudguards. No problems whatever.

Hi
As already said I cant see any reason why they would not be allowed as long as you used locally approved light units, just be careful of the quailty
of the clear glass, a set I bought were about as optically correct as the bottom of bear glass.
Im using 7 inch semi sealed beam Hella H4s with Narva + 50 bulbs in my daily and they work great.

The US spec light are available without sealed beams. Just try US ebay. come with clear lens and fitment for signal globe
You can fit your old light to the new unit easily. so you can fit sealed or unseald.
No problems with rego as most new cars now have signal light within the headlamp unit .
