looking after a rat
I have a vehicle that iam going to keep as a rat, it has bare metal in places that i dont want to paint over ,what is my best option into keeping the
rust at bay ,i have heard lanolin but i was thinking of spraying the vehicle in a good quality clear ,any advise would be greatly appreciated .Thanks

iv used lanolin before and its residual properties are nowhere at the standard of what they claim,it never lasts as long as they claim. i would say
you would have to keep applying it. im not sure how the clear would go because clear gives off a gloss finish doesnt it? which sort of defeats the
purpose but i could be wrong my 2c's anyway

and always ends up leaving a smooth finish when done properly and you can pick the stuff up you need real cheap from protec paints

clear does not stick to crusty paint, or surface rust. lanolin can be applied, but will have to be maintained. You could use Tectol/ankor wax also.
But spray can Penetrol is the best alternative. Sucks out moisture and locks in love.. dries hard like resin.. You can get it from bunnings

i would prefer to keep it as original as possible and enjoy as is and later on when iam maybe financial ,then restore ,but to be truthful i prefer
when they came out with their first skin so to speak .

i have been using lanolin and it doesnt last as long as they say.About one month or six weeks.And when i reapply it it remains sticky and i end up
with leaves and dirt stuck to my car.So i'll try Penetrol.Thanx Gang.
Also you could put some flatting base in the clear to dull the shine if thats how you wanted to go.
I was going to try fish oil.I done inside the doors and qurters etc and it seemed to dry hard in week or so.Any one tryed it?

Hi,
Has anyone tried spraying clear, well it doesn't work.
And I can tell from experience, maintaining a rat is if not as hard, harder than maintinaing a show car, because you can't really wet wash it and
therfore need to keep it in dry storgae too!
Lanolin is a natural product found on sheep to keep them waterproof, it does not last that long, but if you reapply it every month it is the same as
washing and polishing a show car every month anyway. Penetrol is good for the undercarriage as it can stain the existing paintwork if applied to
external panels. The punp pack it comes in from bunning is easy to apply and just clean your window glass after,even helps keep the old window seals
from gooing hard.
Go ahead and paint clear if you like, it will just mean less original rat than it could be.
