VW Warwick 2008 - Wrap

Hi All,

I've been quiet since Warwick - deadline due today for issue#20 of VWMA. But attached is some of the Warwick coverage that will be in the next issue. There are six pages just like this one. I'm fairly confident I've included everyone, even the early breakages. Each driver's fastest time is recorded in the photo, with a brief description of car and engine, etc underneath.

The weekend was awesome, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, which is the number one aim. Thanks to all who attended and made the weekend the success that it was.

Thanks to Volkswagen Group Australia, Mick Motors, Rod Penrose Racing, Vollkommen Art, The Grange Country Estate, Vintage Vee-Dub Supplies and Euro Automotive for supporting the 2008 event.

Believe it or not, planning is now underway for Portland on February 21st-22nd 2009. Anyone up for another drag racing fix?

Cheers
Craig

Good idea Craig with all the times and speeds next to the pictures of each car.
It is a good way to wrap up the event, and for racers that did not get much chance to watch.

Check out the top end speed from SA's Andrew Clarke 1915cc Rocket!
10.07@88mph!?...gotta be some boost lurking under there?

Thanks Dave. Just gone back through the time sheets. Speed corrected to 68mph.

The computer at Warwick did some rather creative things from time to time. One competitor recorded a 345mph pass!

Oh.

I was not looking for mistakes!

Comming from the Debiasi stables, I thought it might have been boosted.

I think the electric Volksy may have run the 345mph.

Craig,
Thanks again for a great weekend as always.
My two boys also had a great time, they have never been to a drag meet with me before.

Sadly My car only did 2 runs before something let go on the 3rd run Saturday, I haven't pulled it down yet to see what happened but I suspect the new 2.1 WBXer crank and flywheel combo couldn't hack the 5000 rpm launches, probably be a combination of heavy car and tall 1st gear.

This will be the last time I race this car, I think I will build up a nice street engine and gearbox and put it back on the road, it is just getting too expensive to be reliable and competitive, I have to stop somewhere!!.

Thanks again
Dave

Gotta say I've covered a lot of drag meets and seen hundreds covered in publications but I've never seen coverage of almost every car that competed. That says a lot about the editor/promoter and his appreciation for those who entered.

Those few who I missed or only got one or two shots of, I apologise. Next year I should have a better system of spotters operating most the day and will have a better chance of catching everyone, whether they are on the "good light" side of the track or not (anyone know of a good inexpensive two way wireless head set?). Oh yeah... and a bigger tank of Gatorade and Red Bull on hand to keep me running all day.

Next year fingers crossed for a no first-or-second-round-breakage event!

It was a great event and great to see probably the best collection of volksies on a drag strip Australia has ever seen.

Congrats to Craig, the sponsors, Warwick Drag Club, the 'invisible' and often uncredited helpers, the entrants and spectators for making it a most memorable weekend.

Portland will offer a little more competition racing this year, with your VW Portland entry fee allowing street registered VWs to enter a Friday night under lights open drag meet, and for an extra $70, an opportunity to race against the locals in a Chicago Shootout on Saturday arvo. Of course, VW practice and qualifying will happen as usual on the Saturday, plus an extra hour Sunday morning followed by the Round Robin racing. Sunday is VW only at the track. More info will be on the VWMA website in November.

Does anyone know what sort of costs would be involved in a car carrier from up north here in qld (of course pending interest from other races up this way)? I have no idea what it would cost and if it is therefore viable, however I'd love to make it to portland but not sure if I could take the days off to drive down and back (no holiday pay for me unfortunately) :)
