i drive the car 3-4 times a week when im not driving the suzuki to and from work. i dont need anything crazy but 70-80 horse would be nice just so when i want to put the boot in a bit i can. woud like to keep it reliable though. and as for price thats why im asking you guys because iv got no idea on where to even start so im looking to bypass the whole well that was a complete waste of time moments at this stage id put a ceiling of $1500 to do a bit of tweaking here and there but will see what the options are first

$1500 won't go far at all, sorry. start looking for bolt on bit's and bob's in that budget.

once you get seriously building a motor from scratch 10HP = $1K (well almost)

Daimo, that has to be for a delux.
I am currently building a few more, and am aiming at 10 hp = $800. All New.

Haven't you put that thing in yet???

That's what the baby seat is for, strap 'em in while you work on the car.

first thing to do is remove the 2 major restrictions - the stock exhaust and carby

vws by nature were undercarbed and over exhausted to give good economy and long life

a good 4into1 header and quiet pack muffler and pair of duel carbs like kadrons are the best way to wake up a stock engine
just that is good for about 25% improvement on a stock 1600
just do that and see if ur happy next step is ratio rockers or if ur really keen open up and change cam but if ur going to that extreme be better off adding some more cubes while its apart

all this is assuming tho ur current engine is in good health

Big valve heads without port work and other relevant engine components wont do. You already have a minimal budget, figure out what you are capable of doing yourself, then spend all your money on quality parts.

I would do some headwork on stock valved heads, unshroud the valves, open the intake ports, blend the ex ports, match port the manifolds, flycut 0.100, etc.
Get a good merged exhaust system from Westi, Dual carbs pref Dells, 1.4:1 rockers on solid shafts, 009 with pertronix, power pulley, etc. give that a go and see how it runs.

Oh i almost forgot, stay away from water, Porsche didn't like it much.;)

cheers for that, i forgot to mention i can get all my machining done really really cheap through work, and budgets can always be adjusted im looking for ball park figures mainly to brace myself and then go for it. looking at some of the pricing it almost worth while going to a subaru engine for the cost involved in the vw stuff
