Multiclub khanacross Oran Pk 'Eights' 18.10.08

http://www.geocities.com/peterwood7312/buggyproject/zakandpete.jpg

I figured that since the car was all nice and fixed, it was time to go and break something again.

So off to Oran Pk raceway for a dirt khanacross (like an autokhana)!

http://www.geocities.com/peterwood7312/buggyproject/kc08cc1.jpg

My mate's PRC Datto 1600. He was the fastest of several million (ok exagerated) dattos. He'd easily be one of the quickest drivers in the club. We've been mates for years and into cars, but yesterday was only the third meeting we've raced in together. I think it's the most fun I've ever had racing. I know he's faster. He knows he's faster, but that doesn't mean I can't pretend I might beat him!

And here's me in action.

Last pic is my fave. Shows just how hard I was driving by the end of day. Flat out in 2nd and up towards the top of 3rd gear right round the back of the course. The car was awesome. Turning brake is good too, still getting the hang of that. Only downer of the day was loosing the front brake circuit AFTER the final run. Personally I could have cared less. Driving home was interesting but I got home ok. Proper writeup and more pics here...

BTW, one guy came out in a bog stock 180b and had a hoot. What's with all the precious VW owners? Come out and do a khana for crying out loud! :grind:

Worst thing he ever did was buy it!

But seriously, there's not much left of what you sold him bar the shell and the motor. It's fully caged tower to tower now and has new suspension, brakes and interior. He painted it as well. It's a pretty awesome low budget PRC car. The thing that really makes the car is him. He's one of the most natural drivers I've ever met. Very fast and calm at the same time.

Man that makes me cry.. At least it has the good bits left llike motor, shell and rims and seats by the look of it too.....and what do you mean new interia. There was non in it....hahaha. Thats actually the original colour of it when I built the first evolution of that car in mid 90's (there were 4 evolutions of that car and chris bought the 4th one and the best one too). I still kick myself. I finally got the car stopping, handling and going well and then I sold it to chris and bought a subaru..stupid me. And yes it was a quick car when I had so I dont see why it it still wouldnt be. That car had many class wins at state level rally, rallysprint and khanacross' .. It had also ran in the outright positions in a couple of those events aswell. Gezz I had some great fun in that car, man I could tell you some fun stories. At least it is being driven hard, used and abused for what it was built and intended to be used for. ... I think I will go and cry now.

just got the results...turns out Bat69's old motor isn't that fast. I beat it to place 4th outright! :smirk:

But seriously, Chris was very quick. Much faster than me mostly. He just lost out big on a few mistakes. I only bested him by 2 seconds across the whole day.

Have to say this though. Buggies and VWs generally can be made to threaten some very well sorted dattos and escorts....that will come as a nasty shock to a few people in the club I reckon.

I would hope so.. I think that motor only had 90 rwhp or thereabouts and an old 1600 weights over 900kg....hahahahaha. At least is still going. And proberly still will considering it was built by a VW mechanic 10 years ago..

Thats an excellent result 4th O/R. Who won the event and how did the bloke in the silver dato go. He was also very fast when I raced agaist them years ago. That bloke was always near the o/r positions...

Thats what i like about most dirt competition is the closeness of it all and the fact you have to be on the ball all day, over every run, not make any mistakes or hit anything because you will get 5 sec penalities where speed on consistancy are the key and the fact after you add up all your times (generally 8 stages) there is only a couple of sec in it.

Good result pete and yes I would love to join you out on the dirt. I love driving on the dirt and I know there may be a few people out there that may dosagree with this comment but I think your skill level has to be just that little higher to race and be fast on dirt. Im just contemplating during my car re built if I rebuild it to dirt specs instead of tar......Its tempting

the silver datto was owned by a another guy last year and apparently it won the NSW khanacross series. The new owners are quick, but not as quick as he was. Do you know what motor it had in it? They don't the CCs.

An older guy in an FTO 2l V6 powered mitsubishi mirage won outright by a long way. The car had 220hp and a 9k redline. Left the rest of us for dead.

re prepping your car for the dirt, YAH! get into it. love to see another dub on the dirt! I've got a mate with a 1303 that we're modding for khanas. It's got those cheapo 36idfs I found going on it's 1600 and a few other little bits and pieces so he could be competitive in B class at khanacrosses...once he learns to drive that is. ;)

If its the car Im thinking it was owned by Jamie Neale. He only ever did khanacrosses in the thing and he was one very quick dude. He was pretty much the bench mark for the sedans (Type 3 or B class) although a few of the westlakes club members use to give him a run for his money around awaba. Dont quote me but I think the engine was 1998cc. He always ran under 2L. I remember talking to him arond 95 about it and it wasnt that wild an engine. Please dont quote me but I think it was an L20 block (86mm crank) with 1mm oversiz slugs (86mm) (1998cc), it use to run twin SU's and a cam and thats about. The car was pretty stripped out. Either way it would have been a dam good buy. If they ever want to get rid of it let me know... All this dato talk is almost making me convert back to the land of 1600's...................STOP IT! Hope that helps

they won't be selling it any time soon. they've upgraded from a 1600 lancer with an open diff, no brake bias adjustment and no handbrake. Let's just say they're loving it.

And stick with your bug. dattos are good, but mostly coz that's what people know. A 220hp 2.0L V6 powered mitsushi mirage ate the rest of us for breakfast and sounded great (9k redline :smirk: ), but looked pedestrian to watch. 2nd outright was a pinto powered Mk1 escort. My point being, Dattos are not that fast for what they are. On the other hand, VWs gain a big advantage traction wise from the rear engine setup on dirt. I could see that in my pics of the day. Every other RWD was totally sideways all day but my buggy mostly pointed straight and got the power down.
