GM (Delco) Homebrew EFI
Hi all,
New to this site, and already found tons of good info.
I've searched all the sites I could find state side (US), but have had very little luck finding what I need.
What I'm trying to do is use a GM ecu to control the FI system on my Type IV upright conversion.
It's a stock 2.0L with stock injectors, custom intakes, all GM sensors,GM ecu is 7749 from a Sunbird 2.0L Turbo and running DIS ignition using
crankshaft sensor.
It trys to crank but just can't.
The system is complete, but the bin files I've tried modding just ain't gettin it done.
I know there are alot of similiarities with the the ecu's used in AUS.
So, I was wondering if you folks have insight to offer ?
I can give more details, but wanted to keep this, my first post short.
Thanks to all in advance.

Thanks VWcool for the quick response.
Yes, I've read all the Efi stuff on this site.
I've downloaded the jpg's of ratty63 stuff and am going to try adjusting my stuff.
If I read it right, his is an 808 ecu and running a dissy.
Mine is a 749 ecu running distributorless without a turbo.
The ecu has been modified to run the low z stock VW injectors.
All the statesize guys just say go MegaSquirt and be done with it. I never been one to just follow the herd.
In fact, Ive got a MS sitting here in the shop, that's ready to go, but just wanted more control and functions.
Plus by the time you get a MS up to the level of a GM, the cost is way past the GM and it's related parts.
(Trust me, been there, done that !)
The pricetag on my system (ecu, TB's and all sensors) is just under $100 US.
The other thing was to use off the shelf parts that are easy to source and cheap.
The tuning software I'm using is TunerPro RT.
My base bin files have all been GM related 4 cyl. turbo related.
That is part of my problem. Too many settings screwing with too many things all at once.
I've attached a link to a pic of my setup on the test stand.
http://i488.photobucket.com/albums/rr250/Bugnut_photos/Linkage1.jpg
I'm going to get it, but am looking for some leads as to bin files or other 4 cyl non-turbo 749 information.
Thanks again,

In Australia the Delco was used in GM products (and 'badge engineered' Nissans) to run 4, V6 and V8 engines - no factory forced aspiration, but
there have been plenty of aftermarkte conversions. The V6 was coil-pack ignition; the four and V8 used dissys. Try searching for info on 'Kalmaker',
a software package for tuning it; there might be soem extra info that will help

PS: Nice engine!

Hi Bugnut.
Welcome to Aussieveedubbers.
Good to hear from someone else who is attempting to use the GM ECU/EFI parts on their VW.
The ECU that I have used is the Australian Spec Delco 808 ECU - my understanding is that the 808 is very similar to one of the ECU's that was fitted
to a couple of the GM vehicles in the US. Probably best if you check the Kalmaker website ( http://www.kalmaker.com.au ) for more info. If you haven't been there already, there is a message board (like
Aussieveedubbers) that is specifically for users of the Kalmaker modified 808 ECU's. There is a number of people on there with a large amount of
knowledge....
I'm not sure if the bin files from the Kalmaker program can be used directly with a stock Delco ECU as there are (I believe) a few extra variables
available to the users of Kalmaker modified ECU's - which may 'confuse' the unmodified ECU's .... might be worth checking this too on the Kalmaker
message board - if it turns out that the bin files can be used I can email you a couple of the files I have saved from our first engine conversion (a
2.1 litre type IV that was fitted to my brothers Baja) for you to fiddle with....
Stick with it - the Delco ECU is very powerful once you figure it all out!

Thx for the replies VWCool and ratty 63.
I've been busy looking at the places you suggested.
Can't get to the Kalmaker msg. board.
I did find where most of the fuel was going.. yep right into the crankcase.
My injectors (batch fired) were set -up for firing 1-4 then 2-3 instead of 1-3 then 2-4. Just was not thinking at all I guess.
Now it will at least run for about 30 sec. before flooding out. My injector pulse is way off or I've got a bad one.
Timing is still off a little too.
Checking that out this week. I'll post any progess.
Later,

No problems Bugnut.
Was going to ask the "what's it doin?" question, then suggest that you double check all you wiring - it's really easy to stuff up something simple
here resulting in a non-runner (been there, done that).... it looks like you already worked that out!
Looking forward to hearing further results.
Just checked the Kalmaker message board - seems to work for me... I think that you may have to be registered before you can have a look around....
will it let you do that?

Ok all, here's the latest.
It's running ! Not well mind you, but it is running.
The timing still off a little so I've got to make the holes into slots in the VR wheel. That way I can tweak the hardware side of things.
The Dodge Neon coilpack is working happily with the
GM DIS module. (It's just damn cool looking without a dizzy.)
The injectors are still pushing to much fuel, it's running rich.
The 7749 is working well, it's taking control of timing and fuel so now I'll start intoducing it to the sensors one a time to avoid chasing multiple
problems at once.
Still have to work on some (most) of the tables and constants
The stock head sensor is now reading right since a resistor has been added.
Anyway, it's great just to hear it run and not shooting 3 foot blue flames.
ratty63, A quick question. Will the Kalmaker software allow you to save your setups as ECU files?
TunerPro RT can read and ECU file.
I can't run the 808 in the 749 but, I'd like to sneak a peek at you tables and such. Thanks
Also, just for everyone's info the 808's cousin here in the US is a 1227165, but has 8192 comm. Software should work.
More to come later.
