Australia only features...
Can anyone tell me what Australia only features i can look for within my 58 bug? So far i havent found any kangeroos on parts but am still looking, i
do have the armourplate glass and an Australian VW radio and i know she is a CKD car .....so anything else i can look for?

I dont think theres any Roo stuff on the 58s
I think the roos stuff came out in the early 60s when full production started up

Wow,
some Rare pics there...
I've never seen those CKD stamps before...
I suppose many have been painted over...
as time went on... the Australian content got higher..
Glass seemed to be the first thing to be sourced in Australia.
If Your 1958 beetle was fully imported, it should have a small badge behind the spare wheel with
MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY stamped into it...
Eastern Germany was under Soviet occupation.
Speedos plus Hella parts were also made in Australia in the 60s..

Yes,
You are correct about the 100% Australian content..
it was supposed to be much higher than it was...
and Your figures are about correct...
I can remember seeing a metal plate with
Volkswagen Australasia Clayton ??
on it...
I think it was My fathers 1964 beetle...

Bond, kangaroos on the wheels began in the 60's.
It should have a CKD stamp on the spring plates, and another one behind the dash above the radio slot.
There will also be a number stamped behind the spare well, on the shelf where the brake fluid resevoir is. We didn't get body numbers like the Euro
built Beetles.

I suspect 'C' might mean Clayton, but I have no idea what the upper A or B might mean.
As for the '58, I believe it should have an Australia-only colour, such as Manly Tan, Gunyah Grey or Tasman Blue, colours named after Australian
places, so it won't match US or Euro colours. Apart from the glass and some electrical components, I think the trim might have been made here. It
would also have had an Australian battery, and Australian tyres originally, but they are unlikely to still be there now!
Even the owner's manual wasn't Australian-produced until the 1960s.
I have seen references to Beetles reaching 95% local content in 1967, when the non-ferrous foundry came on line at Clayton. Apparently the last step
was going to be local manufacture of the transmission, but that was never achieved.

Theres some damage in the car where the battery was and the base of the back seat was missing so we suspect the battery may have exploded?
I am trying to find out the og colour as i want to get her resprayed eventually and i would like it to be her og colour, when she was resprayed bright
blue they didnt do under the bonnet or in and around the engine bay or the part of the rear apron thats covered by the engine lid, i have posted these
pics on the body and paint section, they arent the greatest as only taken on my phone but you can get an idea what the colour might be, if anyone has
any ideas what colour it could be i would be most grateful....

You guys are right re local content. VWA was supposed to achieve 95% under the Australian Govt Plan "A" but they never made it. In fact they ever
really got close based on some figures I have extracted from annual reports as below;
T1 T2 T3 Country Buggy
1967 (Dec) 80.3% 50.7% 59.4% NA
1968 50.3% 47.5% 35.4% 70.8%
1970 54.8% 49.8% 47.7% 68.0%
I dont have access to reports for other years except 1966 and the local content plan information is not recorded.
The requirements under Plan "A" ended when they moved to an Assembly Plan from the 95% Local Content Plan. Under this new plan the local content
requirements were approved by the Government and at the end of 1968 Motor Producers Ltd were working under the following vehicle plan with the
Government;
Type 1 Local content of 50% and ceiling of 5000 vehicles
Type 3 Local content of 45% and ceiling of 2500 vehicles
Country Buggy Local content of 45% and ceiling of 2500 vehicles.
"At the end of 1968 there was no plan for Type 2 local content as these vehicles are being assembled in our Works in CKD condition due to favourable
economics"

Finally got back online, have been investigating and i do have the ckd stamp behind the dash....its quite faint and not a great picture....
the plate in the front....
and another clue for the paint colour, the ashtray....

Looks like either Summer Blue (#2266) or Alabaster (#3933) to me, as it looks a little more blue than grey to my eyes. But you'd need to go to an
auto paint shop and have a look at their colour chips and compare. If the ashtray is a good original sample - try gently buffing the underside to
bring up the colour - modern paint shops can scan it and computer match it. See http://www.clubvw.org.au/colour_identification.htm

Ask Dave Birchall - he has a collection of original Balm / Dulux VW paint chips.
A good auto paint supplier will have record of the codes if you give them the year, the colour name and colour code, such as 1958 VW Alabaster #3933,
and hence the formula to mix it.
As you can see, we tried scanning the odd chip for that listing but they didn't come out really well.

Also don't forget computer screens are only 3 colour combinations , printed colour (from a printer) is nornally only 4 colour and so can't be
accurately reproduced to match exact but paint manufacturers swatches should be.

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I'm chasing some info on an Aussie Beetle
My girlfriend recently joined the fold and bought a beetle from a mate.
It's apparently an Aussie built 1960, with old style tank and semaphores.
Should it have indicators? Some Internet "experts" have told me they had both
also had some other interesting features

OT though some 59-60 bugs can be real bitsas
adding indiactors to semaphore bugs later in life was part of the saftey upgrading alot of owners did they were never sold with both

I am working on a 60 beetle currently, I believe the semaphores (trafficators) stopped in the late 60 models and indicators came in. If the car has
the holes in the pillars it would have had sema's and not indicators. As stated above, many early bugs have had indicators added to them for
safety, my car has.
I can also confirm the earlier discussion on ID plates and 'Volkswagen Australasia', as below:
