wierd 76 bug??

just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this thing
cos everyone in the know ive spoken to is at a loss
Steve suggested it may have been an evaluation model

its a 76 standard bug but it has some non aus features
due to the age of the owner its hard to get technical info out of her but shes owned it since new apperently and its pretty much totally unmolested just has aftermarket seats and steering wheel and is pretty low milage

from what i can gather its not an import and seems an aussie 76 for the most part but heres the strange bits

its factory fuel injected, and has the single tail pipe muffler with cat converter and Fuel injection badge on the decklid,
genuine original Air conditioning and a different speedo to anything ive seen in aus bugs

afaik only US bugs got fuel injection starting in 75
but its not a US bug they had those huge dodgem car bumpers mounted on shock absorbers, the massive pyramid front indicators on the gaurds and the fuel injection "sports wheels"

plz excuse the crappy camera phone photography

yup definatley not south african
a 76 south african bug would have an Lbug dash and windscreen but have a standard hood and link pin front end with wide 5 wheels

as simon said they also have them uncircumsized tailights

WOW -- Now that IS Rare...

Definately NOT South Africian...
their beetle running gear was never upgraded...

NOT USA - NOT UK - they didn't have Fuel injection either

Aust sold 76 beetles did have blinkers in the front bumpers
I don't think they had the rubber strips on the bumpers
and naturally the over riders were an option over here.
Air Con was never offered as far as i know..

I wonder if it was destined for the Japanese market and somehow came here..
I have heard of other odd beetles that were sold in Australia New..
Never Air Con plus Fuel injected though..

I believe it would have been made in Germany...
for another market...

I wonder if it had front disc brakes???
No USA beetle ever had front discs... all drums...
but We have agreed its NOT a USA beetle...

Lee

PS: I love it when something like this happens....
and sets Our world upside down.... lol

I'm with Lee, my guess is German-built (Emden), for the Japanese market. Unlikely to be Australian simply because the '76 was a 'run-out' model from the Melbourne factory, to use up all of the left-over parts (CKD from Germany) before the '76 ADRs came into effect and the model was discontinued. That, plus VWA needed the factory space for the Golf. The last Aussie Beetle was made in July 1976, but sales of stockpiled Beetles continued until March 1977. I don't believe they would have made a Beetle in Melbourne with FI, cat, special rear valance, air-con and a 'Fuel Injection badge.

I have heard of later German-made Beetles being sold in Australia as new factory Beetles, alongside the old-stock Aussie assembled ones. Green's Motorcade in Sydney's west used to have a 1978 Beetle on display as the 'last' of the series - which it was, as it ended in Germany in 1978. When Greens closed in the early 1980s the cars were auctioned off.

Hi

Seeing as it had air con, maybe it was made for a hot climate, perhaps Hong Kong, Singapore or other Asian RHD markets.

The colour does look like Wattle, an Australian colour, does it look like Wattle in the flesh?

Don't think it's a UK destined one or else the windscreen rubber has been replaced as only the 1200A model didn't have the chrome trim and I don't believe Fuel injection was actually released over there. I thought the Fuel Injection badge was only used on US destined convertibles. Mind you when you get about a bit you do notice that VW must have just sent body presses etc to wherever and whenever they pleased as African beetles seemed to be a mix of early and late panels and the same goes for South and Central American ones when they're compared to European.models.

colour isnt like any aus ones
isnt like wattle in the flesh
thats just my crappy phone which has been continually dropped, submerged and runover

its alot more egg yellow in sun

if it didnt have the FI, badge and single tail pipe it would be like every other aus 76 bug
so thats what has me stumped

i was told it was one owner
altho i wouldnt be surprised theres doesnt seem to be another like it
im amazed it still has the FI
even in US were theres 100s of them they get converted to carb cos mechanics wont touch them letalone in aus were u could count the efi bugs on one hand

funny even with a totally different design of muffler it still has that classic beetle note

Looks like another Japanese market Beetle (not a Superbug). Quite a bit more goodies on them than our locally-made run-out '76s! Makes you wonder how many might be left over there - not many I would guess.

Nice Golf steering wheel in it too, a bit like the later Mexican Beetles.
