just have a look of the front has coil springs. and that the spare wheel lies flat (horizontal) i'm probably wrong and maybe sometimes along the 36 odd years the engine was replaced i don't know but if i'm not there are peoples who just put loads of badges on a car like an SS badge here follow this link.

it varied from country to country to country
but in aus all the mcpherson struts bugs were known as superbugs
the 71-72 with the flat screen and dash were superbug S so had volkswagen S decklid badge and the 73-75 with the curved windscreen and big dash were superbug L so naturally had volkswagen L

in europe they were 1302 and 1303 with an S after if they had 1600 engines instead of 1300
and US they were just Superbeetles

problem is over hte last 35+ years ppl have swapped engine lids repairing accidents and rust so u find allsorts out there

freinds had a 72 1300 beetle that had a superbug engine lid so it read vw1300 S even tho there was no such thing in aus

other problem is ppl get confused on engine size
cos 1600 engines are 1584cc some ppl think that means 1500cc...

my SS was for Super Sport
it has 5 extra hp with the painted brake calipers and 10hp more for the SS badge
the formuling steering wheel added another 5hp also
and Lukey performance sticker add about 10 more so i have about 90hp at my disposal

***note that this hp is totally bogus and doesn't make any real sense

Quick paint the name on the tyres with white crayon this is worth another 15 hp. This beetle will spin the wheels as good as any ricer in wet weather!

a vehicle Defect sticker is the ultimate upgrade it means 200+ on the dyno
bald tyres mean u can do burn out so that's atleast 70+ on the dyno
and some would go to the extreme sound system so that adds another 20hp
