can you drive a 71 beetle (legally) on the road without an engine lid, ie: wrx engine or any other engine that will stick out past a closed engine
lid..

yes and no.
You don't need to have a lid but you must cover the engines hot and moving parts.
Most people just fit stand offs to the factory deck lid to allow clearance. If you move the transmission fwd 50mm it will fit under

Why would you want to as people could tamper with your engine steel bits off it, get heaps of water on it if it was flogging down rain which would
make it hard to start. You can modify the rear aprion to make it fit without moving the rex engine forward.

Well stated Rose why have a beetle that looks lke a bag of leftovers,if you have a baja OK but a beetle is a classic motor car that deserves better

Well my engine lid doesnt have a lock on it so I guess it would be just as easy to tamper with it.

I asked this question cause a mate and i had a few strong words over this matter..
i was thinking about doing a rex coversion but worried about the engine sticking out past the lid..
He said "you can drive without a lid"... and i said "but only with club reg"...
who can conferm this?
how are the baja's and buggys able to do it???

a lid is not mandatory but all moving and hot parts must be covered the pullys need a cover like the buggies use and as the exhaust are hidden there
is no need to wrap heatshield oround it and that goes for historic rego
in short if you can get caught on it burnt by it it must be covered

You shouldn't be getting 'Club Rego' - ie. Historical Vehicle Registration - for VWs with non-standard engines. In NSW, Historical Registration is
for classic original vehicles with period accessories only. Subaru-powered VWs are out. See the rules at http://www.councilofmotorclubs.org.au/default.php?id=3&inc=subpage&su...
As a member of the CMC, Club Veedub Sydney is very strict about this. Other clubs are not so stringent and you may be able to sneak one past the RTA,
but the CMC has the power to report non-compliant cars (and clubs) to the police.
