What's the best single carb to suit my stock twin port 1600?


Hi, I have a stock twin port 1600 in my 1971 Beetle. The engine itself is stock but runs a 009 dizzy with Compufire electronic ignition, Bosch GT coil, high flow airfilter and equal length extractors.

Actually I just fit the extractors and noticed I had to also change the intake manifold because the one that was on the car when I bought it had an intake manifold with 4 pipes running to the exhaust (2 on each side) instead of the usual 2 pipes (1 on each side). My new set of extractors have provision for only the one pipe per side type manifold. Luckly I had one of these manifolds spare, butnow my Brosol carby doesnt fit due to different bolt up to the intake manifold...

So here's my question: what is the best carby I can get that would fit my intake manifold that has one pipe per side coming out of it and going to the exhaust??

You seem to have a 1976 engine/intake.. it has four pre-heat pipes, not just two.

The only carby for a a standard intake is a standard carby, if you are chasing a bit more power you could fit a single centre-mount Weber or dual carbs like Solex/Kadrons

OK - few problems/things

The 4 bolt manifold is unique to late 1976 only beetles
Do not throw it away - some one will want it as they are very hard to come by.

If your carb doesnt fit now then you have an early 30 Pict sized manifold and you will need a 34Pict sized one.

A 30 Pict will work on a 1600 and is probably a better carb than the 34

Choice is yours
1)30Pict
2) new manifold

I've decided to keep the intakemanifold with four preheat pipes and simply block the preheat pipes. That way i don't have to change the carby (it's a brand new carby...)

Only the two extra pipes...

the other two do keep the inlet from freezing in the winter...

PS: I've never heard of a four pipe inlet manifold heaters..
I'd like to see a pic of it..
It would fit the Catalytic converter exhaust??
with one exhaust pipe..????? LEE

Lee, as Barry said they were only on 76 bugs so theyre quite rare
they were known as twin hotspot

cat converter exhaust setups were only fitted on EFI bugs and preheat isnt needed with them cos theres no fuel in the intake to refrigerate

i had a twin hotspot manifold a good 8 years ago, it came with a bug i bought was so badly rotted i chucked it not knowing anythign about it
wish i had a pic but it was b4 i had a digi camera anyway

seeing you have already changed the mainfold n exhaust get an daptor plate for the carby so it will fit

that was just a google search
i wasnt expecting it to be so easy, any other time it wouldnt be

its better to do it properly as dave said and use an adapter
but in pinch u can use the twin hotspot manifolds with a a single riser exhaust and just drill some extra mounting holes
thats what the story was with the mustard bug i bought
it was a 1300 that had been rebuilt as a 1600 so they fitted a 1600 manifold and carb obviously off a 76 bug,
the 2nd preheat was just left unused and a crappy monza 4 tip exhaust fitted
