starting off,and were do i start?
hey guys i got myself an mk 1 golf n im goin to start racing it, like rally and motorkana etc. id just like to know what would be the first steps that
i would take for preparing the car?any hints or tips would great.

what he said then...
1. get a CAMS basic license, helmet and a fire extinguisher.
2. find someone else who races the same golf (successfully) and ask them to mentor you.
3. decide what class you are going to race in.
4. set the suspension up and get the car to handle properly. (the car should be competitive once this is done)
5. put a cage in the car (you'll know when you need it)
6. build a hot driveline
most people do this the other way round and waste lots and lots of money and time.

where the cage comes in would be as soon as you venture past motorkhana. In a khana, anything that goes wrong will be gentle. Push it back on its
wheels and go again. Anything where there are trees or poles or ripple strips or potential for high speed sideways action is potentially lethal. We
had a fatality at Huntley after 54 years of nothing, and also could have lost a club member at bathurst after his car flipped. Fortunately most of the
impact went on the passenger side of the roof. There are pics of his head fully outside the car, so a window net is also highly recommended. In my
opinion these are infinitely more important than a fire extinguisher and battery triangle, though you cant race without the latter.
Something else that cant be underestimated is the seat. You cannot steer a car when you are also using the steering wheel to support your upper body.
Its impossible. A seat is 1/2 a point above suspension mods in my opinion also.
To get the most out of it, dont turn up with the intent of winning. If your enjoyment comes from trophies, go and buy your own for $10 its a lot
cheaper and easier. Be content with improving your own times to begin with. When your times begin to plateau, thats when you need more hp,

good call chris. hadn't thought about the seats as I already have them. re the cage, anything bigger than khanacross/motorkhana demands them.
Khanacross are a good place to get your suspension setup before you shell out for a cage though.
