Pourous Solex Carb?

Gday all,

I have dual Solex carbs on my 1916 and the rht one seems to be leaking thru the alloy body somewhere.

I've tried sealing the brass plug points etc with no luck.
After sitting overnight fuel pools in the head near the valve guides (seen after removing carb) and fuel is also evident around the mounting studs and all around the base gasket.
The float bowl is MT after 12 hours or so of sitting overnight. I fitted an electric stop valve in line as a matter of course so the whole fuel tank dose not drain into the engine.
Question, are some Solex carbs defective and known to have porous bodies? The engine is under warranty and I have requested a replacement carb, they are going to get back to me on that but in the meantime any clues where the problem may be?

Cheers

Thanks chief. Yeah they are brand new carbs (under 10,000 klms anyway)
Another problem with the porous carb is the accelerator pump pressure is poor and only manages to pump half the amount of fuel the left one dose.
I have stripped the carb and blown compressed air thru all the valleys etc and there are no blockages or splits in the diaphragm so this carb has real problems and will probably cause the engine to wear prematurely.
I'm still waiting for the supplier across the other side of the country to accept its a warranty issue (clearly is) and get back to me. Hope they do the righty, time will tell...

I was quoted around $900 for a pair of Scat carbs and around $1200 for a set of Kadrons complete but these carbs look very similar in design to the Solex so there's no point in spending big bucks on parts that are probably made in the same factory or indeed prone to the same probs as the Solex/Brosols?

Cheers

Thanks Bruce. Just heard back from the dealer and they are sending a new carb to replace the crook one.
That sounds like a good price for the Scat carbs, cheers. Pays to shop around!
It will be interesting to see how the 1916 runs now with the new carb fitted as my little 1600 single carb twin port beetle could easily out perform the 1916cc no exaggeration. I was beginning to wonder about the merits of going big but until the carb is on I'll hold my judgement. Not sure who built the 1916 or what spec but it did have new cases, alt, tin and heads...

Cheers
