Bonnet seal + more questions
The seal on the underside of the bonnet does not exist so I purchased one of ebay. On the bonnet it does not have a lip to fit the seal to. As I
understand it there should be some type lip lip that the seal slides onto. Is this the case?
if the answer is yes, then where can I get one from. Emailed Imported Autoparts and the guy informs me that he has he has never soled on but he will
chase it up to see what he can find.
Can I attach it with some kind of glue or silicone?
Also, the reverse lights do not work where would be the first place to investigate? I cant see both bulbs being blown although I have not had a look
at that as yet.
Thanks on advance
Thanks for any help you can give.

What model beetle ??
Yes, there were metal strips either side of the bonnet
that held the rubber in place plus around the bottom/front also.. these were on the body... NOT
on the bonnet...
to try glueing the rubber to the body..
firstly You would need to clean the rubber...
the flat part.. with alcohol or methylated spirits until it was
Very clean...
Many glues work fine unti We have the Very hot summer
when the temp is over 35C..
the glue usually dies... silicon shouldn't let go if the surfaces are spotless...
there are about 4 holes across the top corners where the seal fits... it has protrusions or nipples to push into the holes...
You can get Mexican style rubbers that just pushes onto the lip of the bonnet... it doesn't go across the top...
so You will need something there...

take a tail lamp lense off and check if there are any bulbs in there...
You will probably find there aren't any bulbs...
as I haven't seen many beetles with reversing lamps, unless they were hooked up by the owner...

it would have the crimp strip originally for hood and decklid, all bugs did excluding the late mexi bugs
thats about one of the only parts that never changed
the decklid rubber never changed from early 40s right thro to the last 1980 cab
the strip is the first part to rust on most bugs and alot of ppl actually remove them and fit the mex rubbers like dave said which clip onto the lip
under the hood and decklid
one less rust trap is better i say
what model bug is it?
cos reversing lights were only fitted to 72 on bugs
but problem is the original non reverse light lenses are hard to get so most ppl with 68-71 bugs just get reverse light style lenses
but if there not working they get power from the + terminal on the coil and theres a inline fuse which corrodes inside after 35+ years in the
weather
failing that the switch on the nose cone would be the other suspect

the life of me, was just going to go to clarke rubber and grab a piece and glue it in.
reversing lamps, yes they may not exist and just have the newer lens on it.

Dave it's funny how people think you have an ulterior motive just because you know that certain suppliers have the parts that they want but don't
want them to get the run around.cheers
