MUSSO SSANGYONG HELP WANTED.
OK, you can stop laughing now, its not actually mine, i'm helping out a mate.
does anyone know of a musso forum or better still has anyone fitted an alternative motor and / or box to the 3.2 petrol 5 sp manual system?
i know its a big ask but if you dont ask you'l never know!

ok the story is my mate has one, he fried the motor, and these beasts warp the heads very badly, i've been looking for 7 months for a head with no
real joy, so im removing the entire lump and trying a different powerhouse. whilst the motor may be unique to the box i'm prepaired to swap motor and
box!
the body and everything else is very good so it seems a waste to scrap it.
i've struck another problem, i cannt get the motor out!! theres a crossmember in front of the sump, and the bell housing hits the firewall when its
jacked up! i think i'll have to remove the sump or the gearbox!!
ideas please! cheers jon

My old man has one and I admit to even being in it once or twice. Many of the above comments I do agree with, although when it is going it actually
goes sort of ok. He has had cooling and auto probs and since it was cheap he has continued spending money hoping it's the last time...
I could get some forum links from him if you wish, but try google. The merc engine is quite strong and thirsty, but it is a merc.
If burning it isn't what he wants, replace the engine with same INMO.

Get rid of it.
Does he want a vehicle that big ie 4WD, or will something smaller and more efficient do? Does he need to tow a boat or something? How much money is he
prepared to spend on something better - ie T4 or T5 for the inside space?

I see a few of these about in the country...
but mostly the Newer ones...
I was lead to believe that the Musso engine was a mercedes designed engine...
probably made in Korea or Asia somewhere...
better to fit another engine..
I don't think enough of them were sold , as it was the 1st time they had been sold in Australia..
about 14 years ago...

thanks guys, i've learned heaps over the last few days, the most common thing is "burn it"
my mate owns an alpaca farm, so he needs a big 4x4 for towing the animals about and getting feed etc for them.
no one actually removes the engines, you cannt!! the heads get re-worked but the bottom end is bullet proof, in iceland they run them with NOS and
44" tyres!!!! no mods to bearings etc, just gas flow the heads and new valves!!!
the engines and gearboxes are fitted to the chassis then the body is dropped on top, to remove the motor the gearbox must be moved back to clear the
fly wheel, and the sump with the oil pick up pipe removed so the sump can clear the front cross member. i work in an ex-musso workshop, we are in
touch with other musso workshops and today they told me "you cannt do it", so now i'm contemplating the removal of the body!!
cheers, i'm nearly a musso expert now!

All that wasted effort and time could have been better used on doing something usefull on a vw.

menangler and gellecan, thanks for your constructive comments, i did ask the question in the "off topic" section, and i dont suppose either of you
have anything else other than vw's in your lives, cooker, barbee, hoover, house?? you all live in vw's right? and nothing has ever gone wrong where
you need to ask the assistance of others.
being a car forum i thought car people would be able to shed light on my particular problem. but as you clearly cannot distinguish between toyota,
mercedes, and ssangyong perhaps it would be more constructive to say nothing!!
for those who have an interest, i now have the motor out, it wasnt easy, took less time than doing the turbo's on a toureg, now i need to get the
fresh motor back in! cheers jon

ps rose, when the musso is done i'll be doing good stuff on my collection of veedubs, syncro needs sorting, 69 notch needs a service, 62 notch needs
running gear, 73 square needs converting to a trailer, baja needs finishing, etc etc etc

There's always something to do to any car. Sounds like you have a nice collection of vw's. I hope it didn't end up costing your mate an arm and a
leg for the merc engine replacement. And it didn't seem to take long as I know of customers waiting months for merc parts to come in from overseas.

There is a whole forum dedicated to sangyongs been there once or twice getting low down on mods to do for more power and to stop them blowing smoke
(and they do work). Some pretty knowledgeable guys on there too.

Also if you want to fit an alternative engine id suggesd getting a v6 commodore cheap as chips a place called V6 conversions may have a adapter kit
to suit it to your gearbox. Website has a mercedes (mercedes= sangyong) listing but doesnt specify what cars probably worth a call.

Alternatively try john sherman he may be able to make up a adapter plate not sure if he does but worth a call.
Personally if i were gonna do a engine it i go v6 or v8 commodore and auto box get hilux transfer adapter plate to suit commodore auto (this links
back of comodore box to transfer) then make up your tail shafts to suit.
Good luck with it
and if that all fails just burn it

We were thinking of the commadore v6 conversion and LPG, how cheap will that be to run?

rose, ssangyong have a delivery date for parts arrival in Oz on 30 jan, thats only if they can fit the parts i need in their container, i want 2
engine mounts, there are 7 in the container but no-one knows if they are spoken for!! i got parts for my syncro from italy, uk, germany, singapore,
and sydney, the sydney parts took the longest time at just over a week to arrive!!
theres still a chance i'll burn the thing!
