Took the opportunity yesterday to step back from the wall occassionally and slow down the shutter...

Fantastic cars.
Club Veedub Sydney approached the organisers of the Nostalgia Drags a couple of years ago, about the possibility of having a VW class included in the
day. They turned us down, sadly.
Maybe we should try again?

Why?
They have to turn away entrants in thier core classes.
Make a VW fast enough for 'Gas', or in line with the rules for 'Vintage Gas' and they can run.

Unfortunately WSID is way too expensive for VW clubs to book and organise a 'VW drag day', in the same way as Warwick, Portland or the previous VW
Nationals drags at Oran Park. It just isn't possible (unless someone wants to donate $20,000+?), which is a pity. That's why, instead, we are going
to supersprints at Wakefield Park for the Nationals next May.
The only way to get a VW thing happening at WSID would be to tag on to an existing event. We thought the nostalgia drags seemed the most attractive
option, if possible. We would have loved to see VWs racing on the same program as classic V8s!
The NDRA turned us down about adding a category for VWs, so VW drivers would have to look for an existing category (as you said), but they are not
VW-friendly! American and Aussie Muscle cateories don't apply, obviously, nor does the 'Exhibition' class. Gas? It's for Pre-1980 US or Pre-1972
Aussie muscle cars with ETs of 10.99 or quicker. They do allow 'other makes or models reminiscent of the era', but I doubt that would include
Volkswagens, even if they could beat 10.99, as their A/AA and B/BB classes are all for either 6 or 8 cylinder engines. Vintage Gas is for Pre-1967
'specially themed sedans', Aussie, US and Hots Rods, running 9.5 sec or slower. Again, the classes are all for 6 or 8-cylinder engines. Nothing
there for VW-engined drag cars. All the rules are at http://www.nostalgiadrags.com.au/drags/index.cfm
It looks like the Nostalgia Drags will remain a great day to go and watch, but not compete in, for VW drag racers.

Nothing there for VWs?
Mike Kristen has had both cars welcomed. Cranky ran at many events and the Ghia debuted there on Sunday.
Dave Stoker has had his car welcomed several times.
A Beetle being built at the moment is going to be in Vintage Gas very soon.
Again, why would they add a category to their event? VWs were expected to compete against all others at Castlereagh.
If you can't compete, don't winge... build a car that meets the rules.

Glad to hear there are a few VWs sneaking through, I hope that continues. I read that their rules allow "other makes and models reminiscent of the
era" on application.
I'm not complaining - I'm only noting that their rules, as currently shown on their website, only cater for 6 and 8 cylinder cars.

you really gotta ask
why the poor old vw is so sadly treated, you can't get hotrod statis nor street machene now vintage drag ,and the humble vw is thwe most single make
rodded car in the world and they have been draged since the early 30's oh well i suppose they will have to get there own thing going
i like the wakefield idea, and its sad that a great idea as nos drags is so muscle car orintated. maybe it's just me i really like the old runners
having a go

Adam Debiasi also ran his turbo green beetle and ran high 11's at one of these meets a few years ago.
Matt, Awesome pics as always. Wish you were in adelaide, I would like to use you for some advertising I am doing.
I love the Altered cars. Just read an article about them in Street Machine that mentions a class for them that is still running.
Would love to see them, actually would love a strip in Adelaide so I could see anything.

The issue with entries is not that VWs aren't appreciated, Mike Kristen and Dave Stoker/Michael Waldron are testament to that. It just isn't the
appropriate event for them unless they fit the classes! There are two more cars in Sydney that will be suitable and from talking to the organisers
will be welcomed at events as soon as they are ready.
The major Nostalgia events are always fully subscribed - Sunday's event had to be limited in most classes to NDRA members - those that consistently
support the event. Unfortunately many entrants didn't show on Sunday because of the likelihood of bad weather.
The classes are set up to reflect what the majority want - if there are spaces then they will consider entrants outside those that fit clearly into
the existing classes.
There are opportunities for new classes. HA/GR (HAMBsters) was a dream not that long ago - the Yanks got less than half a dozen cars done - we got
more than a dozen done out of one shed! We played by the rules - the organisers knew we were gonna be a popular class and we got in. Not only that -
we got a whole new ANDRA classification with 6 cars on the track in 18 months from when it was just talk.
VWs have been drag raced for a long time - but in small numbers. And they were always very special cars. That's the spirit of the event.
