Its a J&S low nose, its still a mess, but there is hope!!!

Hi all, just wanted to say hi, just bought a new project so i thought id join up and get involved!!, its been over 16 years since i last owned a GP buggy in the UK.

Now to the project(its so exciting its like early xmas for me), I can tell its a J&S buggy, something to do with a big diamond logo on the side with a j and s inside it!!, can anyone offer more information from the pictures?, it looks like its a SWB from the weld mark behind the handbrake?

The chassis number showed it to be a 1968 which ties in with the front discs?? and the engine number shows as H1245239, which is also from the same year?

Now to the questions, do they still make this buggy?, were can i get a windscreen from?, does anyone own one of these? any information i can gather from the Gurus here would be most helpful.

Many Thanks

John

Thanks for the links guys, soo many forums to join and read!!

Unfortunately i cant find a NSW registration history from the RTA, have yet to try VIC, WA, SA and QLD, although im not sure that even matters.

Still need to find me a Windscreen and surround if anyone has one hiding in their shed be sure to let me know!!, do you think a manx one may fit??

My aim for this old girl is to fully rebuild the chassis with some decent strength steel (50 square RHS2) and lay in a 2.5mm plate floor and then add new original front bulkhead/beam etc, find me a nice engineer fellow who appreciates buggies (im in the windsor area if anyone knows of a respectable one), get his finishing advice needed for the chassis, then move onto the Drivetrain and "fluff", im not sure of the NSW requirements but im sure they will be harsh, my aim is to get her up and rolling by june, with just the engine/electrics/etc done for xmas.

As for the body....hmmm, deep cherry red is winning at present, probably some kind of big flake old school metallic with as much clear is i can lay down. also aiming for a three seater, with a low bucket in the centre rear, leaves room either side for a subwoofer or two!!

Couple more pics attached and the colour i like too!

Also if anyone is ever in the Windsor/Vineyard area and you break down, be sure to shout out, if i cant help fix it or give you a push at least you can grab a cuppa/beer while waiting for the tow truck!!!

Cheers

John

Its a low nose J&S. I'm building one up at the moment. I do have a spare windscreen frame and I might have the glass somewhere. On mine I'm incorporating the widscreen into the front rollbar . Don't let people tell you it can't be registered , it can be if you go about it right.

Feel free to PM me with your price for the screen, my out-laws live in Nabiac, they might need a visit soon!!!, also if you have any advice on doing the the registration side corectly then please do share!!, id also like to see how your incorporating the screen, sounds interesting.

I did think about finding an engineer from the start, I thought they may be put off by the current state and make my life harder!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKj4xWdF8lA  is a youtube link to a buggy build and shows the kind of chassis modification i was looking at, if the engineer were to see the added strength and safety I thought might be more open minded?

just my 2c.....at the moment though im after a whole pocket of change before i rush in:crazy:

Many Thanks

Ok. thanks for the heads up Ian,

I rang the RTA, there was no records listed against the chassis or engine number for NSW, I also checked on the REVS site, nothing listed there for the chassis number, now ill speak with the police too, seeing as you brought that point up.

Has anyone dealt with a good engineer in the Sydney region or should i just try my luck from the RTA listing, i'm sure they are all profesional I guess its just finding one you can work with???

Good to hear, now the modification have to comply to the design rules , i had a customer this year who has spent $45000 on a New Cobra kit car only to find out it does not comply with the ADRs :fakesniff::fakesniff:.
For a engineer try Lakesedge Engineering services he has helped me with a few buggies.
PS You do not need a demister or heater in a buggy:lol:

Stranger and Stranger.......

Today I rang and checked with every single states Road authority as to the the previous life of the buggy, nothing was registered in any database they have access to!!!, even as the original beetle there is just a blank.

Might have to name it "stealth" and spray it matt black!, or burn it and name it a bad purchase, :ninja:

I think if it's been out of rego for more then 7 years, the records get wiped out of the RTA files?

Did you get my U2U?

That makes sense as to why no-one can trace it, thanks for the engineers name as well, I sent him an email.

Also thanks Pete for the engineers details close to me!!, ill send him an email too, cant hurt to get lots of advice I guess.

As for taking a mold, im sure that will be fine, ill ask my brother in law the best way to go about it, he has been a fibreglasser for years, if anyone knows, he will. Having a proper long lasting mold about would be handy for all us J&S owners, ill use the copy myself and keep the original "plug" safe somewhere.

Going to start her up today, get a feel for the motor before I pull it out and strip her down to bare chassis.

that sounds about rite from the RTA so it will be regoed as a 1968 Volkswagen unknown.
best to talk to a engineer . two of us just put Subaru turbo motors in our Beetles and one in a buggy ,no prob with the engineer as we talkd to him before we started our projects and we did what he told us to do.

I've done the same thing, everyone said wasn't possible. Was possible, just difficult.
Must be something in the water- lots of J and S buggies around Windsor and Blacktown. I'm putting a subaru Turbo motor in one now (Kings Park). I'm out there today (sunday 21 dec)if you want to come for a look or get the low down on engineering. Liam 0414 652769

Welcome to the nut house .
You will also notice on the other two forums that we are both having a weekend at Stockton Dunes near newcastle in the early new year , it would be great to see you there even without the car , usually plenty of spare seats etc .
Would obviosly be a good opertunity to see a few other peoples rides too and how they have done stuff etc.
