Air vents behind glove box (expert needed)


Me and my old man have spent Hrs ! thinking of a place for my head unit. right under the two main air vents where most head units would be was going to be the place, But theres nothing there at all to hold the head unit in place there fore it would have to be all custom which is no problem, But theres just too much plastic airvents behind there So the glove box was the next option,We removed the inner glove box and wow what do you know more of this plastic pipe,My question is can i remove and block these pipes In photos only , leave the rest but remove these ones simply to make the head unit fit.

This was going to be the original spot for the head unit, hiding all the wires was the biggest issue..

Can't see a problem with removing the pipes. I am assuming that they are the hot air pipes for the front windscreen vents.
Out of curiosity, what year type 3 is it. Them pipes look much bigger than what's on my 65'.

Yeah notch nut Im sure there the hot air pipes for the front windscreen and ill only be blocking the passengers side so ill still be fine lol..
And yes its a 72, Both you guys got 65's, good year ? I plan to get an early type 3 next time better looking car.
well ill give it a couple more days then thoes pipes are coming out !

Cant remember seeing those pipes on mine (71 fasty) sure they are there but I have full console with the stereo in the center so cant see why you are having any clearance problems. Are the hot air pipes in their original position or been changed at some time. I wouldnt be losing them as they work quite well.

GTMac can i see a picture of your console.
The pipes havent been touched original spot in pics.
I dont know if my headunits alot longer then others, but If I was to have it in the center it would stick out too far and thats pushed up against the black box ? heater box..got no idea what it is.making a custom holder and also making it Look Good would be a pain in the ass.

Hi

I think I have a really old radio from a Type 3 somewhere and it has surround/base to bolt it to the bottom of a Type 3 dash.

Here is a pic of mine. It will stick out a bit further I think. I had a surround before like the one Steve has mentioned and it fitted fine. All stereos are the same length.

Looking at some old resto photos I think your pipes need to be tucked up higher, especially the right fresh air vent.

Ahh yes Ive seen this pic before.Thats a neat set up.
well I sent steve a Pm so ill wait to see if he can find it.
As for these pipes just went a checked them and they cant be moved up any higher at all,I allways said to dad they look shit exposed like that but i cant physically move them any higher ???

yeah I know what you mean, they look untidy but I have forgotten about it because of my console. That 4th pic of yours, your right, that fresh air pipe cannot be moved but you can buy same size flexi pipe and re-route it so it is out of the way. Also in that pic you can see the fan unit, Im toying with the idea of removing that to make room for air/con unit which will prob also mean I loose the center console.

That flexi pipe sounds like a good idea,That will be on the list to do things.
Air con would be a very nice touch,but to loose the center console for it.dont know if i would.
Have you looked into what that would cost.

The black box you mention is the fresh air box, which houses the 2 speed fan. It is also part of the drain channel for the fresh air intake vents ( ie. the ones under the windscreen outside ). Make sure you don't drill holes etc. into this or you will get wet feet ( a previous owner did this to mount a radio bracket :no:).
You can disconnect the hot air vent pipes, you'll just loose the demister function. But you should be able to fit the head unit without needing to disconnect it completely, using some smaller diameter flexible pipe should help. Isn't the original glovebox a similiar depth to the radio ?
( also, most radio faceplates were made for the earlier cars which have an indentation in the bottom dash edge for the radio, so they don't fit your 1972)

Well Me and the old man got stuck in this arvo and made a full custom headunit brace for the center console.
The glove box just wasnt going to work how i wanted it,cheers for the help Notch Nut , GTMac , 1303Steve ,VW-VARIANT-L .

Air vents work ash tray works which will hold my i-pod soon.very happy with how it is so far.
The only bummer of the arvo was when I broke the plastic cable which opens my bonnet,no idea how im going to fix that one..

Good job on the stereo holder. Whats going on with the dash, original dash painted, recovered?? Re the air/con, I have most parts from a Liberty Subaru but taking my time on how to do it. Steve who has answered some of your questions on this thread is doing a trick setup in his Beetle so I am going to have a look at that and yes dont really want to lose the console.

With your bonnet opener, lots break. Get a choke cable from super cheap and hook it up or do what I did. Put a pull ring on the end of the wire and it sits tucked up close to the firewall so out of site.

Thanks,Thats my old mans handy work.
The go with the dash Ive cover the middle speaker hole and sprayed the hole dash with spray putty for that smooth finish,something different,it will be painted the same colour as the car.
fixed the bonnet cable too.
Are there pics of steves beetle, trick set up in the air con or is the hole car trick.

The initial finish on the dash will look good but my only concern would be it being flexible and soft so proned to cracking. Give it a try and I look forward to seeing the results. Steves whole car is trick, will be such a weapon and cool car when its finished. PM Steve for the link to his own blog, cant remember it or I think he may have it in a post in the Non VW section originally posted by ReubREvHead regarding radiator front cooling or something??? Have a quick search, its pretty recent and I think I actually was the last post.

I was a bit worried about the cracking too, As it had cracks in it allready but I filled them all with fibreglass then put a layer of fibreglass over it all,Then the putty spray,plus it will be painted professionally,so if it cracks after all that ill be well pissed.

Steves car is looking trick look forward to the finished job.

Ill get to my motor one day, But atm I just want to get the dam thing on the road,I think ill only ever do a car from scratch once ,next car will be done up allready lol.
