1965 low rise seats????

can anyone help with a problem i think i have (no not owning a beetle) i have a 65 type 1 and i can't get the drivers seat to go all the way back, there is a small grey handle on the inside of the seat that hits on the tunnel,my question is do i have a passenger side seat on the drivers side or is there something i can do to allow the seat to move further back?

Pretty sure the handle and non-handle ends of the adjusting rod are interchangeable - from memory they're just held onto the rod with a pin (sorry, nowhere near my 65 at the moment so can't check)
