There should be plenty of second hand ones around. I have one out of a 71. I don't know if it would be exactly the same?

all the windscreens are the same size -
in 1968 to 1976 beetles with a flatish windscreen.
ALL Non Supers and 1302S Superbugs for thuse years are the same...
Used windscreens will most likely be the toughened glass
type which shatter on impact from a stone etc...
All New ones should be laminated..
as the safety glass type are No Longer legal in NSW.
Keep asking - there should be heaps of used ones about..
LEE
I bought a New laminated one in 2005 for $140
windscreen only - it will cost more for them to put it in..

$165 fitted from just about any windscreen place. Unfortunately you cant tell if a good or lazy person is commissioned to fit it until it is too late.

Cool thanks guys
I just need the glass to put back in when I finish painting it. The windscreen cracked when I was pulling it out. I cut the outside rubber away from
the glass and frame then I lightly tapped the top inside corner with the heel of my hand. It cracked from top to bottom. The back screen came out no
problem at all and I was tapping it heaps harder? Spewin!

I would buy new
Most of the old (if in good cndition) would be safety glass anyway
There is an affiliated company with O'Briens called something Cheap Glass or stupid like that and they were literaly half the price whaen i got a
commodore glass changed. Receipt was from O'Briens
What i am saying is - as usual shop around
Bib difference for the exact same glass

Background -
I have removed and fitted probably 500 screens for work over the years. They were crash work, and fitting the same window and same rubber is pretty
straight forward for a fairly stndard and not too old car. We are talking Corolla's VC Commodores and XF falcon rears, Wagon and van side glass etc.
when the cars are only a few years old. Windscreen places do this kind of work as bread and butter. Quick and easy, that is why I did them in
house.
With older cars, I have done about 50, mainly for old Holdens and VW's. Windows with chrome mouldings. If the moulds are bent, the rubber is no good
or wrong, or there is a problem, I work it, I fix it or with communication I explain what needs to be done to achieve a restoration result, not just a
slap in of a window.
What has happened-
I have seen quite a few Older car fitments that are obviously done by someone who either doesn't care about their workmanship, is too lazy, hasn't
got the experience, won't speak up when the rubber is wrong, or rust is showing etc. Not all cars are perfect, not all rubbers are perfect, it is not
like clicking a LEGO set together. But anything is possible with skill and patience.
I get any screens that are not standard done by a specialist fitter. We are talking a guy who grinds screens down to fit them properly so all rubbers
and moulds fit perfect in older cars that are very inconsistent in their build. Try 2 days and $1000 labour to fit a Jaguar E-Type screen. When you
see the screen go in and out a few times, being ground down to get a perfect fit, and the finished result, you appreciate it.
Sometimes you don't know until it is too late that you ended up with a lazy fitter.
With the glass, you will find that most front screens are made from laminated glass which is soft and able to crack relatively easy. The originals if
never replaced were toughened glass like all of the rest of the glass in your VW. Toughened glass shatters, but is very strong. I have been lucky
enough to have never broken a front window taking it out. I have however broken an XF Falcon rear screen taking it out. It just exploded! The boss
wasn't happy.

wow, that's attention to detail!
What's everyone's opinion about Windscreens O'Brien? I can only get glass of them if I'm to get my free glass from Shannons..

Shannons will pay O'Briens direct for your glass and fitment.
Your other option is to get it fitted by your choice of fitter, and upon claiming with Shannons with the ABN'd Tax Invoice you will be reimbursed.
This means you can fit it yourself, but you will only get the actual cost of the glass paid for.

I'm happy for O'Briens to fit it - I don't have moldings in my screen rubber... I'll tell them to alert me if there's rust though. I think it's
crap that the screen needs to be cracked for them to replace it... never mind that it's got 50+ years of scratches and abrasion marks on it that
pretty much renders the screen opaque when an oncoming car's headlights hits your screen....
