yes - there is a special hub cap removal tool

http://www.aircooled.net/new-bin/viewproductdetail.php?keyword2=EXA0004&c...

but most people use the flat blade of a tyre lever or large screw driver.
depends how pristine your rims are

i always used a screwdriver on my beetle but the hubcaps were stuffed already.

i would imagine that with a wire coathanger and a pair of pliers you could fashion a suitable "hook" to get the cap off.

A claw hammer works well on the early domed hubcaps, just place the end of the claw under the rim of the cap and use handle of hammer to lever it off. You can tape a bit of cardboard or rubber to the head of the hammer to protect paint.

Matt.

You can make one like the illustration, then slip the shaft of a screwdriver through and lever off the tyre. No scratches on the wheel or hubcap.
