| Golden Fleece petrol station

This was the Golden Fleece service station in Garbutt, Queensland. The photo is undated but it looks like the early 1970s.

Check out the beach buggy in the foreground.

Sure, these aren't hard to find. This is another Golden Fleece, at Boyne River in QLD, 1975. Photo from the National Library.

 Doesn't seem that long ago...

My cousin has some Golden Fleece memorabilia. Old oil churns, the racks and the glass bottles the oil used sit in out the front of the servo and some
old signage. He plans on using it for shows when his 56 Split is finshed as a display.

I remember the AMOCO Stations, they had a promo once and you could get a police hat with a flashing light on top
 They were great!
there was no shortage of variety between the different oil companies.

Golden Fleece had "ACTIVE 8" which made it better than other petrols.... lol

FIREZONE was an upper cylinder lubricant....
 in those little bottles...

I can remember going to a BP service station at Booral NSW ... [5 houses?? ] in My Fathers 60 Beetle
[Me unlicenced] and the petrol was 3/3 a Gallon...
three shillings and 3 pence.... lol

In the early days - the attendents used to wear uniforms
and a Cap... AMOCO was the last Big Brand to arrive from the USA with uniforms and a CAP...
[not a cheap cap like today either]

while the petrol was pouring into Your tank...
they would check Your 4 tyres with air and check Your Oil... so many cars back in those days could have mixtures of different brands of oil....
lol

Although Many people had their Favorite Brands....

 Caltex - BP-COR - AMPOL - Golden Fleece - SHELL - Total -
Mobilgas - & not forgetting Your friendly Neptune Dealer..

I can't remember who sold CASTROL oil???

AMOCO had their "final Filter" at the top of the bowser where the hose connected to...
TOTAL was a late comer too...

You could MIX Super and Regular together with some pumps - I think BP Multimix - and Caltex ?...
which was a good Idea.. I always used 50/50 in Beetles etc....

and nearly EVERY Service station out of the city sold and fitted New Windscreens

Most windscreens were fitted into rubber like VWs....

 wherever there was a dirt/gravel road ..

You needed to be able to buy a New windscreen...
as the Safety Glass shattered on Impact....

Mixing petro grades was a big thing however I remember once in a little town called Hillgrove (3 houses and a petrol pump) I filled up with standard
instead of super, 20 miles into Armidale and it was running like a hairy goat (and we all know how they run) so I tracked down a servo that sold me
some Shell A racing fuel to top up the tank, Did that make the Peugeot 404 perform, yea har, back to Newie in reckord time.
