My Squareback's too loud (apparently)

Hi there,
I had to get my car checked for noise levels today, and apparently it failed :(
Anyway, the guy said it would cost heaps to get a new one etc. and i was wondering if anyone had any good ideas as to what to put on it. He said it was going to be hard to get the level right with a non standard part...
any ideas?
thanks
Pete

It only has one air cleaner, and everything is standard except for the muffler. And I'm not sure what that is.
I think we are just going to try to fix up some of the little holes in the pipes and replace the muffler.
And then pray...

In NSW - Rear engined cars can be legally LOUDER than front engined cars... this law is 30+ Years old...

the Law could be the same in Victoria...

Many local VWs have noisy exhausts and never have any problems...

"holes in the pipes" shouldn't be any holes....
VW engines hate holes more than any other car.. IMHO...

it probably has extractor exhaust on it... which nearly every VW did have in the 60s-70s..
if it has extractors , it will have a normal looking muffler -
oval or round near the end...

the original VW exhaust goes from one side of the engine to the other...

Lee

here is a pic of a beetle muffler - type 3 is similar with one exhaust pipe out....

because police don't see hundreds of quiet beetles every day... they only see the occasional noisy beetle ...

all VWs should be noisy... lol

the RTA has a decibel rating for vehicles this can be carried out at most exhaust shops. The meter is part of their mandatory equipment. If it has little holes and leaks it will be noisy and inefficient.

I know, i thought she sounded cool!
Well I'm getting some help on the weekend to fix up the holes and replace the muffler so hopefully that helps. Might even go better?
Apparently it was only two decibels over the limit so it should be ok.
