permit ran out. Here's what I found needs fixing.
G'day.
The permit on my van ran out a couple of days ago. I was using it to move house the 50m or so from the old one (Yes really), and using the move as an
excuse to get a permit and test what problems exist on my van.
I think I'll need a bit of advice on how to fix some of these. "How do I fix this?" is pretty much implied in every item.
What isn't a problem is fuel economy. Seems better than ever! Sure beats the rust out of the Falcon.
Most obvious issue is the accelerator pedal. the pivot pin keeps falling out the side so the pedal falls off. What is meant to hold it there? It never
used to fall out because the whole assembly was twisted (which led to the failure of the S link thing and the hole in the accelerator bar thing). But
I straightened it, and made something to replace the broken S linkage thing. All good except the pedal keeps falling off.
Squeaky front beam. Are the roadworthy people going to care?
Noisy transmission. I believe it's low on lube. I have the tool, but no idea what the best thing to put in there is., as I understand some hypoid
oils can be corrosive to a VW transmission.
Organ rupturingly bad shuddering on takeoff. Can't figure that one out. Could be bad mounts, a buggered clutch, or what?
Random 'Pop' in the exhaust when idling usually. Had this problem since before I replaced the inlet manifold and carby, the dodgy head and partially
repaired the exhaust. There is still a post-collector, pre-muffler leak.
About all else I can think of is a problem with the 'good' head which I didn't need to mess with, or some kind of ignition problem.
Idle speed is pretty random. Not like the drift of a vacuum leak, but the base RPMs that it settles on seem to vary. Can't give a value because I'm
trying to figure out which tach is right and which is wrong.
Besides all that, the rest is theoretically straightforward. I think I will do the following:
* Fuel leak at pump - replace with electric and blank off. Also need to upgrade fuel hose diameter. With replacement of the pump, the whole system
would have gone up a size.
* Dodgy sparkplug lead connector - Get a new set.
* Left wiper keeps missing some glass - replace blades and keep fiddling.
* Fuel gauge inaccurate - Actually put the correct value resistors on it.
* Indicator warning light not working - ??? I think it has something to do with fuel gauge. Long story.
* Big underbody heater tube missing - DOES ANYONE HAVE ONE PLEASE??? I have been looking for years with no success.
*Random fuel smell - connect fuel evap line to something. Used to terminate in air filter. When I replaced the carb setup the connector hole went with
it. Already bought a barb fitting to drill into the new filter.
After all my battling it seems I'm down to the minor details now. Feels good. Yeah.

Sorry. It's plate is '75, although it seems to be a '74 model. Whatever. Camper derived from a panelvan.
1800 type4 motor with single Weber progressive fitted. Used to have dual OEM solex (the nightmare with the independent idle throat. Automatic model
jetting) until I cracked it with them and put the Weber on.
Manual transmission from a 1600.
Any other info you need, just ask.

Transmission oil suggestion anyone? It's a good place for me to start.
