Beutler Utility Beetles

This, however allowed Beutler to go it alone. From 1950 Beutler turned to the VW Beetle as the basis for its automotive work. The first Beetles had been imported in Switzerland in 1948 and proved very popular. Beutler had already displayed a Beetle with a tiltable sunroof, common today but a somewhat innovative feature at the time.

In the early 1950s Beutler produced a number of "Utes" Beetles, utility models. The first of these sold in numbers and was a basic Beetle pick-up. Essentially just a Beetle with back section chopped off behind the door pillars. Behind was a flat pickup bed that didn't really offer an awful lot of capacity

The original pickup as used by the Beutler firm is still in existence and has been fully restored..

I like the baja look, there was the goanna buggy on here somewhere that was a tray back and done nicely.
On the baja you could lose the back guards and run the tray over the wheels and run big lift and tyres. cool.

Thanks guys, all good Ideas but as it will spend most of its life, camping etc; I will make it into a baja. Any ideas on engine?

Would like to keep it air cooled, maybe type 3? Or perhaps standard 1600. Want to keep it as light, reliable as possible.

stick with type1 bug style engine but u would have to go baja style rear atleast

engine wont get enough cooling air with normal valance and decklid like that white thing above has

type3 cooling wont work in anything bar type3s
the fan on the crankshaft does a great job of sucking in hot air of the zorst and heads

My first regoed car was a baja ute. Built it and had it all aproved myself, in Qld too. Was great up the beach camping etc. could carry heaps more gear than a normal baja. Even could sleep on the tray at times.

Definately keep type 1 style engine, type three will overheat unless in a type three, or has ducted cooling air, type 3 are also too long for decent offroad departure angle, especially with a 4-1 exhaust (sometimes cool people call it a zorst;)).
