Hiya All,

I'm not at all familiar with Australian laws and regulations regarding copyrights. However I am aware that most countries do respect and abide by international agreements regarding the rights surrounding intellectual properties. The circulation of PDF copies of Muir's work does sound like a copyright infringement.

And I have had a inside view of the other side of this equation. My daughter used to work for Avalon Travel Publishing. ATP owns the rights to Muir's work. I'm seriously doubting that anybody at ATP would sanction or tolerate this. On the other hand, ATP is a publishing company that focuses on travel related literature. How they came to own "The Idiot Book" is a story in itself. Anyway, the Muir book is a bit of a stepchild in the organization. ATP really doesn't know what to do with it.

Even so, remember that you can expect to get burned if you play with fire.

Just buy one second-hand on Ebay - do a search on 'VW Muir' or 'VW Idiot'. You can get one for less than $20. This will be far more useful and practical than a pirated PDF version - which you would have to print off anyway to use in your workshop. Have you priced inkjet or toner cartridges lately?

Better still, if you are a member of Club Veedub Sydney, you can borrow a copy from the club library for a month, for free.

The Muir book is ok but it's not the best manual for VWs. Buy the factory 'Bentley' manual.

Mike,

As a layperson untrained in law, my interpretation of the Copyright Act 1968 as amended, Section 43C it is permissable to reproduce a book [that you own - see section 1 a] for private and domestic use. In this instance providing evidence of ownership and then obtaining a single electronic copy I think meets the intent of the Act. However, just getting a freebie copy I believe is in contravention of the Act.

I don't know about the others, but I copy the relevant procedure from the book onto A4 so I can take it to my workshop to work on my bugs. This keeps my book from getting filthy and destroyed. Before I got this PDF I used to bend & shove my book on my a-i-o printer to make a photocopy of the relevant pages - which obviously causes damage to the book. Now I can just hit the print button and not shred the book. When I finish with the (by now) oil & grease covered pages, I just bin them. These copies I believe comply with Section 43B of the Act (Temporary reproductions of works as part of a technical process of use)

Mind you, if I have mis-interpreted the act then let me know and I will delete the pdf - and go back to mashing my book.

I think for the common maintenance work, the Muir book is heaps simplier to understand and apply than the Bentley manual.

I haven't seen many Bentley manuals for the early 50/60's in Australia. The early manuals I have seen were the Scientific manuals (The blue cover, the green cover and what appears to be a really early brown cover one). Did the Bentley manuals come some time later?

Bentley Publishing bought the licence to print the official (US-spec) VW factory workshop manuals. I have a copy of several early 1960s factory manuals, that came in large blue snap-ring folders. The Bentley manuals were cleaned-up, re-sorted versions, published as 700-odd page soft-cover books. But they are US-based so they reproduce US-spec workshop manuals. All versions are still available, including 1952-57 Beetles, and early Kombis. Expensive, though, at $100 and I personally would NOT use them in the workshop! Great collector's items to read first, though, and keep in pristine condition on your bookshelf.

http://www.bentleypublishers.com/isbn/9780837603896/index.html

Yes the general Australian-produced manuals of the time were Scientific Publications, which later became Gregory's manuals. They were written in a very technical, almost military style - no 'hey groovy man' stuff you find in Muir. But they got the job done. We have most of them in the Club Veedub library, as shown below when I made a new cabinet to put them in.

Hiya volume,

Oh hey, do know that it was not my intent to rain on anybody's parade. My knowledge of international agreements pertaining to the ownership and use of intellectual materials is very likely far less than your own. As my previous post stated, I am aware that such agreements exist and Australia and the USA are very likely participants in such agreements.

I am solely coming from the position that I do not want to see anybody getting burned because they might be unaware of these agreements and the resulting potential for an unwanted and undesired surprise.

As you can see from the rest of the thread, we really appreciate this book, and are only giving the PDF version out to people who can prove they have the original book form. Like myself I consider my original too precious to have down in the garage, so I use the PDF version to print out the pages I need when doing a specific task, or when browsing on the laptop.

No one here should be using the PDF without having the original.

I recently found 68 squareback, with dellorto carbs. It has very little body rust, runs(ish) and I am happily cleaning it up. I have a rapidly deteriorating copy, and I would love to put what's left of it on the shelf... Thanks a million! This would be wonderful...

PDF Copy

Hey, a friend of mine and I share a copy of this book, and it would make things TERRIBLY more helpful if I had a Digital copy to look through while he had the hard copy. If this doesn't mud the "Principles" waters too much, I would love a copy of that PDF.

Cheers.

How long ago was that, I received my copy in the post yesterday, all the way from UK, I was starting to get worried as I paid for it back on 18th of December but all's good now, nice and new, perhaps i should check the title of chapter 12 and apply.

Whoops. Hehe here I was starting to get befuddled that nobody replied to my request for the PDF, and when I come back here to post another reply I noticed that I missed a few posts here about Chapter XII. Maybe I"m Blind, maybe I just jumped to the end of the books too quickly (Spoiler alert, Harry Lives :P) Anywho, I'll get that chapter title for ya tonight, and as this is post #5, I can PM you when I get it.
