Vw the new volvo drivers

Not reffereing to enthusiest v dubbers out there but has anyone else noticed that since VW is a "safe - European" type car, that the marque has attracted the likes of the "I can't drive for shit" type person that buys cars based on their safety record or fuel economy. As opposed to the person who owns an aircooled vw and likes the things that a modern car has to offer while enjoying the vw badge. Just venting my spleen cos I am sick to death of F***wits in new model golfs that can't stop at a roundabout or indicate etc. Normally I am fairly forgiving of those in a vw car as I own one but on a motorbike, these C**ts are just as much of a danger as those dickheads in commodores etc. Like I said, I am sure it is not the genuine enthusiests of the marque that are the problem but the dickhead that buys a european car cos of it's safety features to compensate for their shithouse driving abilities. IF YOU BUY A CAR COS OF IT'S SAFETY FEATURES IT MEANS YOU CAN'T DRIVE FOR SHIT. GET OFF THE ROAD BEFORE YOU KILL SOMEONE OR THEY KILL YOU.:grind::grind:

Don't think of it as road rage. It is merely motorcycle awareness. A mirror is replaceable, a husband to my wife is not. (in my lifetime anyway).

I don't wish to drive a wedge between Vw communities, but I have NEVER encountered as many F***wits in aircooled dubs as there are in modern watercooled dubs. Like I said it's not the enthusiests just the dickheads that buy off the showroom floor that are the problem.:grind:

Just venting cos I am sick of trying to figure out what goes thru the mind of the average motorist (judged average by their motoring ability).

I drive an old vw and a new volvo. I drive the new volvo because of the dickheads driving commodores with no insurance who smash into other people and stuff their cars. I can drive but I drive the volvo because of the other dickheads who can't drive. Thanks

No shortage of idiots who can't drive. Can't generaliise to one marque of car but their seems to be a trend towards Vw's as opposed to other european cars excepting BMW's who will always be "cockheads" in my eyes.... Commodore drivers will either be sales reps or fuckwits. No denying that but tradiotionaly volvo drivers have had a rep as being "safety conscious" cos they can't drive for shit, Nowdays New model Vdubs are attracting that kind of driver.:( I always look out for Volvo drivers as they have a reputation but it really irks me that I encounter so many VW drivers I would love to smash their drivers window and strangle the dimwit behind the steering wheel cos they are a f***wit driver and do the marque no justice.:td: What is it that people are so stupid??? Why does VW Aust feel the need to get market share from F***wits. Is it cos I ride a motorbike and drive an aircooled vw???

I have to tell a story of what I saw the other day on the way to work. This women was driving behind me looking down all the time, then on my bumper. I was in the Hilux so it wouldn't hurt me if she ramned up my ass. Then when I turned left from Leneghan Drive to go down to the F3 she came up beside me on the bridge that goes over the freeway very short bridge with double lines it also has a small roundabout at the end where you turn left to go to black hill or right to go to the F3 she then drove up the wrong way around the roundabout going the wrong way, then she was beside me coming out of the roundabout so I shook my head and thought what a dickhead she could kill someone if she drives like this all the time. These people should not be on the road at all.:crazy:

Forget the type of car they are driving, forget the age of the driver and their gender, there are heaps of drivers out there with not a clue about how to drive and wouldn't know half the rules of the road, there are even a few who just occasionaly drop their concentration for a second and make a mistake, you and I just may be one of those if we are brutaly honest with ourselves, defensive driving is the safest way to go and if you see someone doing a stupid or inconsiderate thing then make a mental note to ensure you don't do the same in the future. Getting all hot under the collar is what causes road rage, the worst thing on the road I reckon. Of course none of the above apply to me because I am perfect, FIGJAM.

As a Volvo owner too, the type of car is irrelevant. I used to think Magna owners were twats, then Camry owners, and now it's Audi owners ala Top Gear. But in reality, anyone, anytime, can be a twat.

I made a lapse and a small mistake and fully admitted it while driving. I expressed my sorry, and was defensive about getting myself and the other driver out of any trouble. The passenger of the other car was going nuts and was not going to let it go, went off his nut, agro, wanted to have it out, stuck his finger up, raised a fist etc. I was continually saying sorry, hands open, know I was an idiot. I let it go, and I will move on. The other party was out of control. What would happen if he did it to someone with a serious attitude like himself.

I think some people need to get over themselves and their own self importance.

Well from my own experiences it is the commodore, gemini and japanese driving hoons that are the worst.

pull out in front of you, so you have to slam your brakes on,
don't indicate,
pull out in front of you on a roundabout
speed up when you indicate on the highway to change lanes,
cut in on the inside line at the lights.

I sometimes wonder, especally on roundabouts where they pull out in front of you, do they want you to ram them in the drivers door? Which is where my big, safe Volvo 240 is pointed when they pull out.

I am under 30 but it seems generally younger people are just arrogant and rude on the road. It is older people who will let you pull out, give way and show some respect to other motorists.

And yes I own a Volvo, very pleased with it, it is a very comfortable and relaxing car to drive. I have owned Australian built Holdens and Frauds, they are frankly rubbish to drive, compared to European cars, Mercedes, Volvo, Volkswagen....

Not wanting to keep on about things, but if I may say one final thing,

For a lot of people it is things like this that make them drive large and safe European built car,

http://youtube.com/watch?v=YzFXN9lFvws

Some may remember this ad from the television here in Australia from the 1980's.

an S Class Mercedes like that brand new was worth the same amount as a very nice house in the suburbs, nowdays can be picked up for well under $5,000

I'm with desh, there are more inconsiderate people in commonbores and such than golfs where I live.

To insult another group of drivers I think concretors and boilermakers driving around in those 4 or 5 tonners are some of the craziest mofos.

Accidents and parking lot bingles are inevitable from time to time bt some people are just nuts.

A few weeks back I went to Woolworths. As I am walking in from the carpark there is a 50-60yr old woman in a very late model Honda reversing out of a car park and whacked into the row of shopping trolleys parked in their bay. She then drove forward at a reasonable clip and whacked the alloy wheel into the concrete island (she was in the end parking spot). Not to worry, reverse and BANG into the same trolleys. Forward again, this time straddling the island, scraping noises sending shivers up my spine, but not hers. When the wheel again hit the island she had one last reverse..scraaaape.... but didnt hit the trolleys this time, and proceeded to drive away like nothing had happened. A young 14ish yr old girl who also witnessed this atrocity asked her mum for the keys as she couldnt possibly be any worse.

I saw a woman at a servo cut the corner on her way to the pump and scrape the bollards protecting it. The more she tried to get off of it, the harder she pushed into it. All she had to do was pluck reverse and drive off but she's to-ing and fro-ing, working the steering wedging the car harder and harder into it.

The best one I have ever seen though was an old fella turn right onto a divided road. He proceeded on to the traffic lights 50m away and stopped at the red which was on his extreme left. He jjust sat there with the divider on his left seemingly oblivious just waiting for the green.

But what hope do we have. There was the 34 yr old guy who reversed over the wheel stops and through a guard rail of a multi story car park when he was attempting to reverse into a parking spot. I would say this is Darwin's Theory at work but the coronor said it was an accident waiting to happen. Will probably cost Sydney Council millions to upgrade carparks to moron proof.

My peeve is drivers who are compulsive lane changers. There they go, left to right, then back again, and again. Sometimes you get two cars that change places, and then change back again. All to try to save a few metres of position and a microsecond or two. If everyone just stayed in their lanes, the traffic would move a lot faster.

There are always going to be moron drivers. I guess the issue here is - are more moron drivers driving new Volkswagens nowadays, and if so, is this a good thing?

10 years ago there were less than 5,000 new VWs sold in Australia per year, so you could say that only people who liked VWs drove VWs. Today, VW sells 30,000 cars a year and they are now a 'mainstream' brand. People who know nothing about cars, or feel no attachment to the VW brand and its history as an 'enthusiast' would, are buying VWs nowadays. To them they are just another appliance, like their fridge.

I would rather see more VWs on the road than other makes, so I don't mind. So let's set them a good example to follow. If you have a 'non VW' as your second car, get rid of it and buy a VW (old or new, doesn't matter). Then look after it and drive it well - hopefully the morons will follow you.

Phil in my opinion people who buy a Volkswagen Golf as an example are not just buying another car.

What's a Golf start at these days? $30k? $32-35k for something with a few nice options, if you bought some piece of rubbish from Japan or a imitation car from Korea you would pay half that, or maybe up to $20k for a similar hatchback.

People who buy Volkswagen "generally" appreciate quality, German engineering, reliability, excellent build quality etc..

Granted you get idiots driving everything from Corolla's to Mercedes,

I just haven't witnessed any bad Volkswagen drivers and we have a lot of the newer Golf's on the road here in Hobart.

Sure, in many ways the Golf is a class above similar-sized Kias, Protons, Hyundais and so on. Even the Corolla is not in the Golf's class. I think people buying Golfs now, apart from VW enthusiasts of course, are people would otherwise have bought a Honda Accord, say, or a Mazda 3. People who are prepared to spend a bit more on a higher-quality car. Same with the Polo - it's not the same as a Hyundai Getz.

And yes, I'm sure many people who buy VWs DO appreciate their German engineering, quality, reliability, etc. But I don't think ALL of them do, which is why we are asking if more bad drivers seem to be driving VWs now - since more them are being sold, and they have a greater market share nowadays, the answer has to be yes.

I've also noticed that the average new VW driver is not a 'VW enthusiast' in the normal sense, either. Of course there are plenty of new VW enthusiasts out there (such as those on the vwwatercooled forum etc), but I'm talking about the average Golf or Polo driver you see in the traffic on the way to work. When I drive my Kombi, I always wave at other Kombi drivers, and I nearly always get a wave back. I thought I'd also try it when I drive my Mk3 Golf. Can you guess how many other Golf drivers have waved back so far? None!

Im one of your new VW drivers (polo) and a classic VW enthusiast (68 bug) - and when im lucky, i get to drive my friends Volvo.
I was also a scooter rider and im a cyclist (my daily driver is a red roadie)

Apart from the usual culprits (distracted soccer mums in 4wds they shouldnt have, 18y.o dunnydore and fart bogans) i have noticed its not just a particular "type" of car driver that cant drive for shit...

Its ALL types, and a pretty high percentage of the driving population who just shouldnt have a license.

generalisations are not constructive, but i really do feel your pain Notch Nut. I think more should be spent on PROPER driver education in this country (including how to share the road with cyclists... perhaps you may notice there are a helluvalot of us!!) instead of just a 1/2 hour exam, a few "driving" lessons and a 45 minute driving test after which you have basically "bought" the right to attempt to control a 1t death machine on wheels.

in the beginning, the universe was created.
this made alot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I have seen many stupid things on the road, and I have done the odd dopey thing myself (fortunately I have never pranged or injured anyone) but once I saw something that increased my respect for other drivers. About 10 years ago I was going down a reasonably busy road in Camp Hill in Brissy and there was a mum with a couple of kids on bikes on the LH footpath. One of the kid then takes a sharp right turn and heads straight for the road about 150 m in front of me. The four cars in front of me all hit their brakes at the same time. Fortunately the kid stopped before he got on the road but I was very impressed that all 4 drivers were watching the kid and not on the phone, changing CD etc etc.

Similar thing heading down logan way, there was a truck or something going well under the speed limit and a decent queue of vehicles had built up behind it. The driver behind the truck then decides it is safe to overtake on a very short stretch of road, so he pull out and gets into the RH lane. Every other car hits the brakes and pulls left waiting for the accident. Somehow the tosser must have had a flash of intellegence (maybe the self preservation gene woke up) and he changes his mind and pulls back behind the truck. He was just damn fortunate that (a) no-one else came the other way and (b) everyone had made heaps of room for him to be able to get back behind the truck.

A few years back near Cleveland there was a two lane right hand turn on a busy road. One of the vehicles on the inside turning lane had an unrestained child, who rolled against the door and then somehow the door popped open. The child fell out of the car and into the path of the vehicle in the outside turn lane. That driver had no time to react and ran over the child - killing them. I still get scared by this as the driver who killed that child had no chance of doing anything to save the child. He/she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. It could have been me, and there is no reason something similar is not going to happen to me or anyone else in the future.

Not all drivers are bad, I guess the bad ones tend to draw attention to the themselves.

They were talking on the radio this morning about the traffic and road accidents and mentioned an interesting statistic,

1 out of every 500 decisions we make on the road, e.g. changing lanes, pulling out of traffic..moving off is the wrong decision.

We all need to be alert and watching not just what we are doing but what the car behind us, the one in front of us, and the one in front of him is doing etc....

I've said it before... a license is a privilage, not a "right". fact is, to many people think they have "rights" that are just garbage. car licenses should be given out at the end of a full days training course, that way your ability to drive would not just be assessed on your skills but also your attitude.

things that peeve me and are just plain silly;
1. people who do 70 in a 60 zone and then 70 in an 80 zone
2. right lane sitters
3. those who think indicating is an OPTION not the law
4. people who HOLD their phone to their ear whilst driving and ignore the road (saw TWO guys in hiluxs, one behind the other doing this the other say :grind: )
5. tailgaters

the list goes on...

the problem is, like the everything else, they think the road and driving is "all about me". Once people figure out they are not God and the world does not revolve around them this will not be a drama. until then.....:td:

i went travelling around europe last year and organised a holen(opel)astra to drive in as they seem ok to me, i steered clear of peugeot, citreon etc as i dont like them, when i arrived at the europecar in belgium they handed over volvo keys to me to which i replied(what on earth is that!)he advised in a shocked manner (ive upgraded you at no extra cost) but i told him i hate volvos and in australia we dont like volvo drivers at all!He seemed shocked that i didnt want it but eventually i agreed to take it, it was brand new too. When i went visiting mates with it in europe everyone was commenting on how they would love one and how nice it was, i must say it was a pleasure to drive, we did around 4000 klms in it and it was very comfortable, it must have been governed as i could only get 195 out of it on the motorway and the speedo went to 260 i think from memory, i would hire another if i had the chance.

People who rubbish Volvo's from my experience have never driven one or are a part of the "subbies pumpin in the HSV" type crowd.

Yes they are poor in the corners compared with a similar aged BMW or Mercedes but the ride quality and interior comfort is better than the above mentioned cars. The interior controls are well set out and easy to follow.

I also find the seats in Volvo's are the best I have seen, with the deep fitting curves that fit your back perfectly.

Another test for me is how long seats in cars last, I'm a big bloke and have broken seats in every car I have owned within 6 to 12 months, Datsun's, Ford's, Holden's, Mercedes, all rubbish seats that start to wobble about and break springs in no time at all. My Volvo's driver seat is still going strong after 4 years, no squeals or rattles.

Yep if you want a good, safe and reliable family car I would recommend a Volvo.

Yep, was just speaking from my own experiences, my own experience with Volkswagen's have been my Beetle and a Mk1 Golf, both of which I would expect to crumple up like a tin can in a serious crash.

The newer cars from Volkswagen are top notch in the safety department.
