Two batteries?
This might be a silly question but,
i have a 6v '65 type 3 and want to run a 12v radio, can I (is it practical) to run a 12v battery for the radio and the normal 6v for the rest of the
car?

Well....12 volt battery how are you going to charge it up?
Take it out once a week stick it on the bench and charge it?
Seems like a lot of bother just to get a radio,
why not use say an FM transmitter or a connector wired up for an Ipod?
My mk1 golf does not have a radio, so I just use a portable battery powered AM/FM radio,

The problem you would have is charging the 12v battery. You can get dc dc converters to step up the voltage from 6 to 12v. However most converters are
to step down from 12v. I found one 6v to 12v but it was US$375! There are a number of simple circuits online that you could build or get someone to
build for you.

Another idea would be to use something like this to charge the battery up:

Maybe talk to a good auto electrician for some ideas. The step up transformer sounds simple but ,yeah, cost.

thanks for the ideas guys. yeah i will have to have a talk to an auto electrician...
but in the meantime, i had another idea...
would it be possible to run 2 6v batteries connected together, one going to the engine and fuse board and the other going to the radio... would that
make 12v's for the radio? would this work?
any other ideas ?

I was told a few years ago, that a fellow with a 6v kombi had a 12v transistorised car radio and what He did..
was he bought a 6 volt lantern battery and used that to get the 12 volts for the radio... connected in series..
He said He sold the Kombi a few years later and the same lantern battery was still working.... lol
You would need to make sure the radio was NOT earthed.
not sure How he did that....
as earthing the antenna usually earths the radio too...
usually... maybe not all of them...
