Great,

my car was in his shed. I'm in London at the moment and hadn't heard from the guy for a while.
Can I email you please?
I'm going to need more info to recover my car.

...were on the NSW Central Coast. This 'company' was a sideline business for a bloke (no shopfront). It/he imported several KGs and restored my then-girlfreind's '74 Karmann Ghia (to order - one of his imports). She got her car - I am in possession of it now and it is very nice, no problems with quality - but I believe she has been approached by another customer looking for info about trying to recover a large sum of money paid, and/or his car...

I guess that's you, Roweco? If so, I don't know what to say... but I will assist if/where I can

Must some one else who contacted your ex.
He has/had my car but no money involved.
When did the 'company' go down?

I think the best place for you to start would be the department of fair trading:

http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/default.html

Even if they can't directly help they should be able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck

Craig
