This has been discussed a few times in the past. To summarise: Don't bother! With an aircooled engine, slowing the revs reduces the cooling. With a water-cooled engine, it is easier to put bigger tyres on to change the ratios (though it does also change the speed on the speedo!)

To improve economy the traditional methods of reducing the junk you carry around and reducing your speed are the easiest methods. The next easiest is to keep the kombi in tune!

Tyre size on the rear to lower cruising revs wont affect your speedo, unless you change the front ones as well, as the speedo is driven off the front wheel

if its in a splitty then change it to IRS and get rid of the reduction hubs

If its in a Bay then you have what you have due to the weight of the vehicle reduce weight or install a more powerfull ecnomical engine

the cost of the 5 speed will be too expensive vs the engine change or reduction gearbox removal

yes people have used different gearboxes in their kombis...porsche for example...but don't think this will be economcical...if you want economy keep the standard box and install a subaru EJ22...then you can put some taller tyres on and get 30mpg at 120km/hr:rolleyes:

The busses had them from factory to increase torque from the original small engine.

you wouldn't need a five speed for a V8, but lots of americans have done it before. this guy has a vortec supercharged chev 4.3l V6.

http://s571.photobucket.com/albums/ss160/vortecvwcamper/

It's got a 4 speed porsche 930 turbo trans behind it. You'd probably need a G50 to take the torque. The smaller porsche gearboxes (like the 915) might take the torque in the short term, but the G50 is much stronger. Otherwise you can have a 091/2l kombi box built up. Either way, you'll need to drive it with some sympathy.

What V8 do you want to put in it?

hee hee,,, well,,, just my type of topic :-) :-) :-)

666,,, we meet again my friend :-) Go for it i say,,,, but yeah G50 porsche with "LOTS" of mods to make it all fit, cutting torsion tubeout, fabricating brackets to accept the gearbox mounts bot front & top/bottom supports,,, making up toweres to accept the fittment of coil over shocks &/or airbags , gearshift changes, adaptor plate, flywheel & clutch assy, engine crossmember, efi fuel tank etc etc etc

Not a job for the faint hearted nor is it a job for anyone with little money or time,,, talk with Aaron (black Kombi 20B turbo rotary powered Kombi for that , he`s still spitting the porsche boxes & diffs :-)

I went for the full Albins after market gear kit in my late 2 litre thick rib kombi box with very very over driven top gear,,, also recently fitted Peloquin limited slip diff too,,, lots of bucks but seems to be holding up ok now days (cross fingers,,, ouching my woody, preying i havn`t just hexed myself) :-) :-) :-)

early splitty kombi boxes ran reduction boxes on the end of their axles because they were effectively std beetle boxes with the diff turned around & so added the reduction boxes to increase the torque to carry the extra weight that kombis inherantly continue to be abused with,,, just forget about the early boxes man, they will just burn holes in your pocket & drive you insane,,, trust me :-)

If you decide to go Porsche box, then be ready for all the fittment mods & costs & also you`ll most probably need to sort all your gear ratios out anyways,,,, it`s all just very expensive,,, There`s also the "Renault" gearbox route ,,, they`re a very tough box & less work/cost to fit,,, However Albins gears in a late kombi case can hold up to around 400hp-ish & don`t cost an arm & a leg,,, maybe just an arm "Or" a leg :-) but well worth it i reckon.

I'm pretty sure its like about 250-300 bucks for some different 3-4 gears for a 5rib kombi box. My ej22 kombi drives alright in the first 2gears but it would be better with a little bit taller 3 n 4th. Thats what I will be doing
