I might be tearing my T1 engine apart soon for a rebuild. Is there are sealent to go between the barrels and case? What type? What about between the case halves?

Hi

I always use Curil made Elring the VW factory gasket company. I never put anything on pushrod tubes seals either. Under no circumstances use silicon.

Yes Curilall ( spell) is another good one as it does not go hard. Its a very light poo brown colour n comes in a tube.

I just use a smear on the push rod tubes.
It dont hurt.

Let me know if you carnt find it in Mel n will send some down,.

No one has mentioned the barrel sealant

There is a hi temp silicone RPV? or something
and also a blue one.

Either way i didnt use the Locktite or Curilall(sp?) there, it was these other colour stuff

I use permatex on case halves and pretty much silicon anywhere else.

I use permatex everywhere.

I don't like silicone, I found it leaks prematurely if used under the barrels. I found permatex works much better there. I also use it on push rod tube seals.

The only place I found where nothing was the best is the cork rocker cover gaskets.

Dont you just hate it when your bottle of permatex tips over and there's gluggy tarry crap on your bench, or even worse on your tools!

I wish I could find ANYTHING that would work on my POS dry sump pump! Always a constant source of leaks.

or you take some with you in your toolbox, and it leaks in the toolbox.

I usually spill mine on the shed floor. it's pretty disgusting stuff.

Permatex 3H or something... Now renamed Loctite something as Dave described?

I found this out a long time ago. It BEADS or forms a bead when compressed if overused.

I used it to seal a fuel tank sender unit only a smear... and it beaded and eventually broke off.

I didnt have the stock fuel filter in the tank stand pipe so the silicone, was aloud to swell from the fuel form say about 1/32 Inches dia to about 1/8inches dia

Once it was this size it just some how sucked into the fuel line cause the car to stop running every now and then

Too some time to figure it out, but i suspect it would do the same with the engine if beaded say oin the base on teh cylinder barrells.

It would swell if contacted with oil and possible get sucked into the system causing blockages etc etc

pretty sure it was on the old Total vw forum. One of the mass motor builders use to use it. Cant/wont remember who. Anyway it use to bead and break off if the case.
From there it would get stuck in the oil galleries.
"Apparently" this motor builder had a significantly higher failure rate towards oil starvation.
