sports race seat....


hey guys, i just bought a set of sass seats for my 71 bug and i have taken out the orignial high back seats.... WTF...
how the hell do i fit the sass ones to the old rails, do i have to get an engineers or do i just weld them on..
i cant figure out what to do as the old seats look like there one piece.

P.S. the car is not roadworthy or regersted yet..

even if you weld or just bolt in you will still need an engineers as you have changed from stock

my 1971 bug came out standard with low back front seats, the 1972 bug has high back seats if you can find some they fit on the same rails, as for your sports seats try calling a few car trimmer as they fit a lot of after market seats. Black needle motor trimming or Rod Penrose

well i've been told that if i use the original bolt holes i don't need an engineers, and i got that info from vicroads directly.. i just want to know how I can fit them... too much of a tight ass to pay someone..

thats the thing vw seats dont bolt in. they are on slides. so you need to attach the seats to a set of original slide bottoms. this where it needs to be engineered. so you bolt you saas seats on to the frames then get the engineer to certify the mounting of the seats.
if you look on the seat base you will see a oval frame this is the part you require.
ill post some pics of my silvia seats when i can find them.

the silvia seat above was bolted to a nissan skyline lifting rail and that was then bolted to brackets welded to the superbug frame then certified by the RTA engineer prior to registration as per the requirements in NSW.

my rota bug had a racing bucket drivers seat when i got it
the original vw runner had been removed from the floor and the universal rails you get for racing buckets bolted to the floor where the original was removed

i went for something abit easier in my Lbug tho and bolted my buckets directly to vw runners
been thro 3 pink slips since with no probs

I put a set of Autotechnica seats in my L bug which has the 3 slides, and we just took the centre slide with the adjusting holes, and the feet that go in the 2 slides on the side, welded them into a new frame which we made to suit the new seats, and they now use the standard slides and adjuster. I have had them in for about 4 or 5 years, and havn't been picked up at inspection time.

i too have to fit busket seats to my bug, can i just weld th seats to the original sliders ?? cant see why that wouldnt pass.its not like the welds would brake.

speak to the engineer thats going to pass it to see if he will allow welding most dont as they prefer high tensile bolts.

That is interesting, as the original seat frames are welded. I have bolted the new seats to the new welded frames with high tensile bolts, but the slider frames are welded, as were the originals.

because unless your a qualified welder ie just under boiler maker, the average weld done by most of us actually form weak spots around the weld due to poor technique.
the point is your not changing the original mount just the parts attached to it.
mine are bolted to original frames and then certified as grumble said.
i dont make the rule i just follow them also if your in an accident and put in a claim for an injury due to the seat and they find out that its modified and not certified. they wipe you straight off doesnt matter. its too bad so sad in there books. its not worth it.

Well mine was done by a qualified welder at his shop. He is a mate of mine, and I helped him set it up, but he had a lot of input into it, and did the welding.

A good case of not what you know but who you know eh!

I have come across someone with a recently purchased T3 bus that has aftermarket seats welded to a flat square plate then bolted to the original mounts with hardware store galvanised coach bolts. (soft as)

As soon as I saw them I advised him to make them No. 1 priority and that was quite a few weeks ago. I hope you read this Brent, maybe I can shame you into it.

still not the worst ive seen try just screwed through the floor pan with 5mm screws.
