Why is my Kombi possessed and giving me the ......

Hey

Just a rant ... my '69 single cab that I love on any other day has been trying to test my patience (well actually it won the battle).
It has all new brakes, newly recoed gearbox (dangerous), new engine with new case and new carby ... nothing spared and then ...
It decides that the starter motor will crap itself and the one that I had in my shed (a spare off my beetle) is no longer great.
And then to follow on the new carby decides it wants to stay on partial throttle (i.e. it is revving at probably 2000rpm plus at the lights) and it isn't the cable it is something stupid in the carby (brand new solex 30/31)
So I have to take it off and see what is wrong :grind:
I love old cars and then occasionally I really hate them ...

Thanks I feel better now.

if it's any consolation it usually happens in threes so you should be safe now.Have a look at the carby it might be the plug in the front. cheers Les

Hey there

Yes I got a new starter on Friday so that was solved.

Pulled the carby off tonight and the accelerator pump seems quite stiff and someone (factory?) had wound up the nut at the back of the pump. The pressure from this was not allowing the throttle to return to idle.
Will find out how it goes tomorrow but it seems to have solved it.
I am wondering whether I need a weaker or stronger spring in the acelerator pump diaphram.

Mainly happy now anyhow ...

Fixing, maintaining and driving old VWs is what we do - enjoy it.

How many 1969 vehicles from other makes do you see still on the road? When was the last time you saw a 1969 Morris, or Chrysler, or Toyota, or even Holden or Ford driving around? They have all crapped out.

All is sorted

I still love my old girl (that's the car)

It is a sticky accelerator pump as I said. Drove beautifully today idling at what sounded like about 500rpm. A little slow but still smooth.

I just needed to vent a bit of old car playing up frustration. :fakesniff:

Thanks for the words of encouragement ... and the humour , Lada

It ended up being the lever for actuating the accelerator pump had been bent (fairly severely) in transit and was binding in the slot and on the bottom of the carburettor. Good to have all sorted.
